Hello,

A buddy of mine finally got the Savage 10FCP McMillan I asked about in a previous thread (see here).

He's looking to get a NightForce setup, complete with tapered base (probably 20 MOA) and rings. Here's a question on his behalf: can the NightForce tapered base be mounted on his Savage? Or are they only compatible with Remingtons?

I hope some of the NightForce dealers on this board can chime in (Alberta Tactical Rifle comes to mind), but obviously if anyone knows that would be great.

Thanks! :)

Since I haven't seen a Savage rail yet from N.F. I can't say for sure that they make one but for sake of time, we have Warne rails in stock that would drop on and fit well. The difference between the Warne Tactical rail and N.F. is that if you're going to put a scope on that is long, like a N.F. you're ok, where you get into trouble is when you try to put a much shorter scope on the rail and because the N.F. rail is roughly 3/4" longer then Warne, your bell ends up dictating how far back you end up mounting the scope. Of course this is all based on how high a rings you go with. That all being said, if he's going N.F. scope, it's not a problem because they're quite long and also have 4" of eye relief. If he's close to Calgary or wants to make a trip, have him call us, then stop by, we'll pick the right combination for him in terms of hieght and set it up to fit him at no extra cost. I hope that helped.

Glock-a-maniac,

If I understand correctly: with the Warne, the scope bell might eventually touch the front of the base if the scope is placed to far rearwards (i.e. closer to the eye); is my understanding correct? If so, I'll be sure to tell him should he "waver" from going with an NF...

That having been said, the McMillan A5 stock (which I believe you sell?) that's on this Savage doesn't have an adjustable cheekpiece, so I wouldn't use rings that are too high (here's what it looks like). I would even go for low ones, but I beleive that because the base is tapered that the scope bell might touch the barrel. What do you think?

As you can tell from my location, we're unfortunately nowhere near Calgary and those fantastically long ranges you have  I hope I gave you enough info to assist "remotely"; if not, ask away.

Many thanks for the insight and the offer. :)

Farrel also makes bases for the Savage actions. I have them on both of my Savage actions and use 56mm Obj. NF scopes on them as well.

Thanks for that; do they have a 20 MOA taper, or are they flat?

NF has a 2 piece 20MOA base for Savage. No one piece though.

That's OK; I found them in your catalogue actually, and am wondering what the difference is between these two (assuming those were the ones you were referring to):
- NFSAVOS Savage 2pc (20moa) old style
- NFSAVNS Savage 2pc (20moa) new style

The Farrell will give you lots of clearance if you go 3.5-15x50. Probably still give you sufficient clearance with 3.5-15x56 as well. I have the Farrell +20 MOA rail on my LE2B with Medium Nightforce rings and the 3.5-15x50.

The Warne rail should not be a problem. They come flat or plus 20 moa. NF makes only 2pc plus 20 moa.
We do instal the adjustable cheekrest from McMillan into many fiberglass stocks.

How does the Warne compare to the NF 2pc 20MOA base?

Also, how do you install the adj. cheekpiece? Do you carve out part of the stock and install the thumbwheels, etc. or is it something that just goes over the existing fixed cheek rest on the A5?

Quality wise the same only Warne make 1 pc rails.
We instal the McMillan "saddle type" cheekrest. The thumbwheel set up is not possible to retrofit.
