Nightforce clarity issues

bench series is somewhat different than the nxs series which is about 10 oz heavier, the nxs's side focus, which means an additional lens group behind the first. This somewhat sharper image isone of the reasons the bench series is used by a few national teams. Usually front AO lenses will seem somewhat clear than their counter parts with the side focus. To me IORs are slightly off color , with a slight yellowish tinge. The recticle choices from nf are designed towards F class

IOR's come with at least 2 lens coatings and one is considered to have a slight yellow hue. Overall, IOR has fine optics and an email this AM indicates they are resolving slow warranty turnaround.

For reliabilty, I suggest none beat NF.

Peter

I just sold my NF NXS 5.5 X 22 X 56 because it lacked the clarity of my
Leopold LRT 8.5 X 25 X 50. Side by side tests are hard to beat. Maybe
I just got a bad one.

Reading this thread makes me think that the one time I looked thru a NF I was possibly looking though a lower end version because in all honesty it was no better than the elite 4200 I had on one rifle with me that day nor the falcon I had on another. Of course, I made polite noises to the fellow who had the NF as I was aware that his glass alone cost more than my rifle and scope combined but I was thinking "look cool but really can't see what the fuss is about".

FWIW there are chinese NF nock offs floating around. I had one customer send me a scope he bought off ebay that he wanted warranty work done to. It was not the real deal.

I saw one today in fact , not a good scope far as i'm concerned , no where near as clear! built cheaply ! Before you buy , buy from an authorized dealer, or be sure to check it out very carefully, you won't be able to miss it , they are like night and day . Just take your time and check it thoroughly. And like RL said , they come in powers that NF doesn't make !

I appeciate all the comments and the responses but a few of you should re-read the origional post.... I have an NXS, IT'S FANTASTIC AND I'M LOVING IT....... it works FLAWLESSLY.... (as in; fantastic scope, great, extremely impressive)..... the NXS is on par with and actually better than 85% of the other scopes used beside me at 1000 yds. A fellow shooter has a custom Leupold, it was a 36X but now has a doubler added. The NXS is equal to it vision wise and I believe has better features......... My reason for the origional post was, even with the NXS being such a fantastic piece , THE BENCHREST MODEL IS STRIKINGLY BETTER TO LOOK THROUGH, Two of the best shooters at the last 3 day match looked through it at 1000yds and were shocked. The odd thing is the NXS is around $2100 and the Benchrest was around $1450. (Similar to what you'd pay for a Leupold mark 4) , I've paid less and gotten a better scope.
If the next Benchrest looks as good as this one, i'll buy another.

Mike.

You will ask 5 guys and get seven opinions. Everyone is an expert. NF has a proven track record as well as other quality scopes. I would bet that these quality scopes we refer to are more consistent than the quality of the eyes looking through them. Ice-Pick, I do understand the point of your original post.

Zeiss, Swaro, Khales, and SB all make outstanding scopes too, but they are less attractive to competitive shooters because they either lack magnification, a suitable reticle, or their price is disproportionately high. (Very few benchrest or F-Class shooters like or use Mildots!)

Thanks for that tidbit... Was always curious as to why that was! :)

IP, you are observing something that is inherent in the side focus design. It doesn't take much to cause the image to just loose that crispness you are expecting.

Some designs from a major brand simply don't work without alot of fiddling.

Front AO scopes are simply easier to setup at the factory. The convenience of having a side focus has moved most manf to offer scopes built this way - for better or worse.

The same problem exists with binoculars. Roof prism (straight tube) are more compact, somethings lighter and overall desired by users. But the design requires more difficult lense alignment and engineering. Get it just a bit wrong and the image quality suffers. Getting it right costs more, big reason porro prism (dog leg binos) are ALOT cheaper with equal viewing qualities.

Some of the reasons quality side focus scopes are more money then front AO designs. More parts, engineering and rejects during manf. But it is a very nice feature for field shooting at short ranges.

It is a pity that yours is on the 'bad' side of acceptable specs. You might want to send it back for warranty work. Maybe they can give it a tweak and get the lenses better aligned.

Jerry

PS as for Bushnell being used on winning rifles, seem to work ok for me. But then I also like mil dot reticles and Stevens actions.

So what do I know :)?????

The only problem I've noticed with NF scopes is that my balance always feels off. It's as if I can instantly feel my wallet getting a lot lighter :p
