nightforce for hunting???

thanks for all the opinions and I agree with most of it, heavy..." ya a little but I usually sit and wait in a open area like a chopping or powerline or some sort of clearing so the weight isn't as big a deal to me and I will be using the NP-R1 reticle I have it in my target scope and love it great for hold off, ranging, and getting target size.

My biggest concern was with fogging, I lost the opportunity of a moose one year because a scope fogged so bad I couldn't find the animal in it could just see him with the naked eye nothing in the scope........boohoo...lol might have been conditions and anything may have fogged but I didn't have my trusty Bushnell and I am once bitten twice shy!!!

Try not to breathe on your scope...helps a lot with the fogging.

If you like the Bushnell Rainguard, but want a more robust, turret turning style scope- you should considered the Bushnell Elite Tactical line? The LRHS/LRTS are really great scopes and fit the dual purpose hunting/precision role well. If you're willing to suffer more weight still, the ERS and DMRII have fantastic track records for durability and accuracy.

Good luck. :)

This exactly. My LRHS is great.

I have a Nightforce, But I hunt with a cheap redfield Revolution, My hunting guns get the ch!t beat out of them. Having top shelf glass isn't something I would ever consider. :p

The whole point of mounting a good optic on your hunting rifle is so it can take some abuse, track properly and work exceptional in low light when most animals are shot. You wait 14 years to get drawn for an elk and spot a 400" bull and you wanna trust a Redfield ???? Or do a 2 day hike up to a remote mountain top and trust a cheap $300 optic.......Im sure its be done but its a dumb decision to make. Doesnt sound like you hunt much.

I have the SHV 4.5-14 ffp illuminated on my 300wsm. I haven't used it hunting yet but the b.e.a.s.t. I have on my 338 lapua improved has never had a hiccup with the rain fog or anything else for that matter.

I use ATACR's on my coyote and one of my gopher guns, not much carrying around but technically use them to hunt, ones a .223 and the other a .17 HMR

Nightforce is great for hunting. I have a 8-32x56 on my DT SRS. I've done some light hunting and it works great past 20 yards (it cannot focus closer than 20 yards). For me it's one optic (an expensive one) that does both jobs.
The only consideration I could suggest is to not over magnify your scope. For the range you want to zoom in close on a far away target. But for the bush you want a wide field of view and only close in engagements. So if you are like me and want one optic to do both try to find something in the middle.
And fwiw the x56 diameter was the perfect choice. It captures pretty good light near sundown which is the time I have captured every single animal.

One of those scopes is probably worth more than our whole arsenal even with the safe thrown in.
If we had that kind of dough to throw around we'd quit hunting and buy a beef farm. ;)
