Nightforce. Is the NXS worth the $1000+ over the SHV?

Still on a quest for a great optic for my mid range 308 rifle.

Now having spent some time behind more higher end scopes side by side, I came away thoroughly impressed (other than the weight) by the Nightforce NXS; compared to similar priced Leupolds, Zeiss, Swarovski (got to say, Cabela's is nothing if not convenient).

So the question i have for the optic... aficionado's out there, is the extra $ for the SVH worth it? Specifically the NXS 3-10x vs the SHV 2.5-10x42.

Unfortunately not being able to do a SxS comparison (and lets face it, inside the store is hardly a test of a scope's capabilities in the field).

I don't know about the SHV, I do own a NXS 8-32x56 and it's pretty incredible. I know it's not much help, but it's a great scope. Short of comparing the scopes with really expensive testing equipment, mere mortals have nothing but gut feel, personal experience, and opinions to go on. The scope is bright and tracks flawlessly, I have shot targets as far as 1000 yards with it with my .260. Just my .02

In my opinion. Yes the difference is worth extra money. I have used and compared both. In the light of the day your not going to see much diffenence. When it gets in less than optimum conditions there is a big diffenence at least for my eyes. And everyone is different.
The other huge diffenence is obviously in the turrets they are crisp and easier to see. The zero stop is rock solid.
Down fall is the weight. They are built like a tank. Very heavy and tough.

Are they worth $1000 more? That's hard to say. I know I would pay the extra, but a lot of it depends on what your going to use it for.

I don't have much to help you here eather. I have sevral burris e1 a leapold vxr an a 5.5-22×50 nxs. The leapold really compares poorly to the nxs. I read somewhere that the shv have the same glass quality has the nxs but the tube is thinner and they have less features but I am not sure it this is true I know I would pony the extra cash for the nxs, you know buy once cry once!

And then you will have the eletis crowd that will barge in to say NF sucks and anything below 4000$ is crap haha. But yeah I love mine!

So far I quite like my SHV 4-14F1, better turrets and more distinct clicks, better glass, better reticle than my Leupy MkIV. Can't say that I've looked through a NXS though so can't compare. Honestly, I'm kinda scared of looking through higher end glass, haha.

I look through SHV and NSX side by side, I can't see the difference in clarity at the store. But end up buying the the NSX 2.5-10×42 because of the features: Digillum, Zerostop, MIL-R reticle with matching mil turret so for me the difference worth the 1000$ difference.

To each his own, but I do not consider a 2.5-10 a mid range optic. Beyond 100 I prefer 14x, beyond 200, 20x etc. I haven't had an SHV, but my 5-22 nxs went low enough for everything for me. For a hunting scope, my vx6 3-18 does everything my nxs could do at a MUCH lighter weight. I don't drive any nails with it so the robustness is not an issue. You haven't clarified what use the scope is for, but that is my 2 cents.

What I'm trying to say, is that I don't think a 3-9 scope (any brand) is worth $1600, but I'd pay $2000 for a 5-20. Just the perceived value to me.
