I'm in the market for a new scope. Trying to stay under $1500. It's going to be used for target shooting at the range, max distance probably 600yds. Since I'll be doing known distance shooting I don't personally see a need for a FFP.

I've somewhat narrowed it down to either the Nightforce SHV 5-20x56 or Sightron SIII 8-32x56. I currently have that exact Sightron and I it's great, but I might want to try something different. Anyone here have experience with the SHV? Where would you guys put your money? Feel free to suggest something different as well, should also I have had a vortex HST 6-24 but I found I liked the Sightron better so I sold it just recently.

More than likely I will stick with the Sightron but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with the SHV. It doesn't seem to be all that popular here.

Nightforce SHV is a nice scope......

I'm in the same boat. I just have never looked down the tube of a Sightron. I don't know anyone that owns one.

And it does all you want? What distance are you shooting at? Looking seriously at that glass.

The sightron SIII's are great for the money. I have 3 of them and have shot with them out to 1100 yards many times and 1300 once.

Works like a charm. They will get the job done as well as a Nightforce as long as your not going to do any durability testing.

Ive been looking at similar models but keep asking myself if "Sightron" is so good why is that pretty much nobody stocks them in Canada with the exception of a handful of dealers? They are in the $1000 market which is huge....its not like the are S&B. Nightforce is all over the place.

Cheers!!

I've wondred that myself why there aren't more Sightron dealers in Canada. I know mystic and hirsch are sold out of certain models right now, so it's not like people aren't buying them, maybe they're just not as mainstream as some other brands. I've had a few different scopes around the $1000 mark and I would have to say the Sightron is the best I've owned. I'm hesitant to buy something like a nightforce NXS as I might have to sell all my others after that, and I don't need a scope as tough as a nightforce. I've never looked through a nightforce but I just don't know if for target shooting a NXS is worth the price of admission. I've read lots of reviews of people saying the Sightron glass is pretty close to the nightforce. Maybe one day I'll buy a NXS a just to be part of that club.

Buy a NXS... and then you will understand how good your Sigthron SIII really is.

I have Sightron, NF, S&B, zeiss etc etc.. For the money you just can't beat the Sightron in my opinion. Optically it is better than a NF NSX and it is optically on par with the Nightforce BR models( which are better than the NSX models in my opinion)...

See when I hear things like that it just reinforces how good the Sightron really is. I'm interested to see what their new SV line will be like.

I just upgraded from a SIII to a NXS, I find the fit and finish of the NXS better, the scope feels more robust ( if that makes any sense )

As for Optical clarity, My eyes cant tell the difference between the 2. But I did sell the S3 since I find the NXS easier to center my eye quickly to the reticle.

As I said, put the 2 side by side and look at targets way out there and decide for yourself.

I did...

There will always be a population that equates Optical performance with funds spent... or with weight. Great but there are now a few that are both expensive and heavy but don't really offer optics to write home about. Some big names in this mix which is sad actually.

I just go by what I can see at distance. If one is better... its better. Individual scopes can vary with QC but overall, I have seen a number of NXS scopes in all their formats.... SIII for me.

Now if really want better, then get a 2014 or newer NF Comp. This I concede IS better but not a scope for all applications so....

I am really looking forward to the new SV Sightron. They are changing quite a bit in the optical elements.... be interesting to see how far they push the optics. Both heavy and expensive... Must be a winner ;-)

PS Here is my list of best optics for F class and LR shooting. Believe it, or not... entirely up to you. Goal to see and resolve as much detail on objects or target at distance.

Clean air with little to no mirage... 1000yds NF Comp (2014 or newer - this is important), March, NF BR/Sightron SIII, NF NXS

In Heavy mirage.... 1000yds, NF Comp by a big margin, NF BR/SIII, March/NF NXS. Yes, the March really is not impressive when shooting in soup.... this surprised me alot but side by side tells alot.

To SEE Mirage as early as possible. SIII..... Until you compete, you will not understand how important this can be. I want to spend more time with the NF comp cause I think I can adjust it to work as well. The March, and NF NXS are essentially blind in air I can barely see.... and that costs shooters points.
