I am planning to upgrade the optic on my 25/06 when I re barrel it and have been interested in the Nightforce shv scope line. I'll use this for wolf and deer hunting and my needs are a quality rugged reliable clear optic that does very well in those low light conditions
However in this price range there are many other choices.
From those experienced how does the shv stand against the competition? Does anyone know of a scope that maybe better suited for my needs for equal or less cash?
I'm looking at the 3-10x42. I want to keep the scope as low as possible
 
Another good option would be a Bushnell LRHS 3-12x44. Bushnell also has a great rebate going on right now which might help with your decision. Talk to Omer at Precision Optics/plainsight solutions he carries Bushnell and nightofrce as well I believe. After dealing with him I will never go anywhere else for optics. LRHS or SHV are both solid rugged scopes. Just my 2 cents.
 
The Shv scope is the Nxs glass without being as bullet proof as nsx series. i.e. Short a hammer to build a barn? Use a NF nxs...

I use the shv 3-10 on a springfield m1a. Glass is miles ahead of any vortex.
And the scope has held up to The most violent, glass destroying action For 300+ rounds.

You get what you pay for.
 
I've got the Nightforce SHV 4-14x50 FFP. Not a complaint about it, would absolutely recommend if it's in your budget range.
 
I have the 4-14x50 f1. Also have a vortex that was $1000 retail. The vortex blows in comparison.

The shv is very clear, clocks are good, image quality is miles ahead of vortex. I would buy another one.
 
I have a Nightforce SHV 4-14x50F F1 on a Tikka CTR which I am more than satisfied with, also I have had a number of Vortex PST scopes in the past and still have a 2.5-10x32mm FFP on a Ruger GSR which I have had no issues with. One thing is that the new Gen 2 Vortex PST scopes are much heavier compared with the Gen 1 PST scopes and more like the Nightforce scopes in regards to weight. It seems that Vortex tends to offer more features i.e greater magnification range in order to attract buyers, while Nightforce offers fewer features but better optics. If weight is a consideration I would look at the Leupold VX-6 scopes, since I find Leupold scopes tend to be optically very good and not heavy.

x2. I know glass is subjective, but i prefer my LRHS over the glass of the SHV. Mine rides in low rings with plenty of clearance and will draw in enough light to shoot beyond legal hours.

Vortex. No thank you.
 
Yes why not look for the LRHS while the 25% rebate is on. The glass is very impressive, I have 2 now.
Don't have an SHV but have NXS to compare too, they are very comparable for clarity and brightness.

Image clarity plays a very small role in determining what is and is not a quality optic. Repeatable and accurate adjustments(clicks) is far more important as is overall durability.
 
I think it's more of a balance act. If it's not durable who cares if it tracks well until it breaks. If it's not clear its not worth having

I've killed 5 scopes. 2 leupolds on an air rifle and 3 vortex scopes on my 45/70 and 458 wm

Ironically I have a $12 fitco 4x32 that has held up on my 535 ats 3.5" mossberg and 458 wm. It now sits on top of my 17 mach 2. It's quite clear surprisingly
 
Lots of hate for Vortex. I've only glanced through the 4-14x50ffp SHV and would much rather have my Vortex AMG sitting atop any of my rifles. However, the difference in price doesn't really make it an economical alternative, or a fair comparison. But, if money was no issue... Anyway, I do plan on purchasing a FFP SHV to get some more time behind one.

Comparing an SHV to a AMG is kinda apples to oranges, haha. Like you said, the price difference is huge. I don't see much hate for Vortex's Razor or AMG series, they're considered high end optics. It's more the PST line that garners some negative press. I've personally seen too many PSTs (Gen 1s) go down and have to get sent in to ever buy one myself.

Can't comment on the tracking of the LRHS personally I'm still waiting to get them out to the range.

And yes nobody is hating on the Vortex AMG lol
