Im looking at either teh leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50 or teh 5.5-22x50 Nightforce. does one have any advatages over the other? what one would you choose and why?

I like Leupold myself, but both will make you very happy. I have yet to use a Nightforce, but I have heard numerous good things about them. I've heard there have been some issues with warranty and servicing, unlike Leupolds. Nightforce also makes exceptional mounts.

Leupolds have 15min/rev of the scope knob, while Nightforce NX's have 10min/rev., if that's a consideration to you. Nightforce BR scopes have 6min/rev.

I own one MK 4 6-20x50 and two NF 5.5-22x56s and there are very few advantages to either. After having both scopes at the range I decided to take a closer look for comparison.

My findings were minor to say the least. The glass is very good on both in fact it was inconclusive to me which one was better. They both track very well and return to zero perfectly. The edge went to Nightforce in terms of adjustments, the clicks were slightly more audible and more crisp(less creep). The leupold is more compact and quite a bit lighter. I like the Nightforce mildots better because they are more of circles that you can see through rather than a solid dot. The Nightforce MLR reticle is better than both of them.

My conclusion was as a range rifle, I would put the Nightforce on it, but for a field rifle, especially hunting, I would go for the Leupold.

Nightforce is the superior optic, however I have determined that the Leupold MK4 line is my personal point of diminishing returns, as my tax bracket increases I'll got to the NF line.

Leupold 6.5-20x50mm Illum MD lists at $1765
Nightforce 5.5-22x50mm lists at $1799 (All NXS scopes are illuminated)

So there is little to choose from price wise. The Nighforce provide better reticle options IMO, as well I find their optics to be noticably better. Also they all come with a sun shade. As pointed out above Nightforce scopes are much bigger, and heavier and this may be a consideration for you.

I'm not sure which is the better scope, I have never run a Night Force, but the more I use my Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 with TMR recticle the more I love it. Everything about it has been excellent. Here is a pic looking through it at 1000 yrds at 20X

I have both a NF 3.5-15 and 2x Luepold MKIV one is the M3 Ultra[10x] and the other is 6.5-20x the optical clarity of the Nightforce does edge out the Leupold

I've got a Nightforce 3.5-15x56 on my LE2B. I love it. I had thought about going with a Leupold, but decided on the spur of the moment and went with the NXS. I wouldn't hesitate to go with the Leupold either, but if I had to choose another scope I'd go with the Nightforce again. Not sure if there's a huge difference, but I like my NXS so why change?

My thought when I went through the same comparison was that for the same price I could get a Nightforce over a Leupy.

LCF BABY!!! :D

Actually it was how solid the Nightforce sounded on reviews I heard, as well as the NP-R2 reticle and the 110 min. of elevation.

I don't think you'll be disapointed in either.

From my experience it is hard to beat Nightforce! Excellent resale value as well I might ad. Another contender is IOR but as tempting as they are, I will continue to resist until reports come back with more stability and better distribution.

I personally own and use both Mark 4's and NXS and find both do the job. I find little performance difference that I can detect with my old eyes so I would highly recomend either one. We sell both brands but have easier access to Leupold so we stock more and bring in Nightforce as required.
