Hey everyone! I finally ordered my target rifle, a Savage 12 VLP .223, and need an optic for it. Gun will be used for strictly target shooting!

The place I ordered it from reccomended either a Nikon Monarch with the BDC reticle or a Leupold VX-2 with the fine duplex reticle.

Which would you choose and why?

Please, only between these two, I don't want to know why you think a Vortex or whatever brand is better :)

In my experience the VX-2 tracks better than the Monarch. Both are IMO what you'd expect optically, maybe a slight nod to the leupold. One thing I will say and this goes for all Nikon vs Leupold scopes I have used in similar price ranges, the nikons always feel cheaper. I'm not a fan of the nikons power adjustment ring, probably the cheapest feeling part overall. I think it was plastic which doesn't belong there. I will strongly advise against the BDC reticle. It takes up way too much space it clutters the center of your reticle big time. If you are target shooting you will have time to adjust your turrets which is more accurate than the BDC circles anyway.

VX-ii 6-18x40ao with fine duplex....will run you about $650.
You didn't list a price range, but if you can afford the VX-III go up to that...

I just Picked up a 5-20x44 monarch and it's excellent. Tracking is just as good as the leupys Ive used and the optics are crystal clear. If you go with the 5-20 or 6-24 monarchs (not monarch 3's) they come with 3 sets of turrets (1 short, one tall target style w/ cap and one easy grip oversized turret) as someone else noted. If your solely going to be target shooting, get either a fine duplex or target dot reticle.

Agreed, target shooting you might look for a cleaner reticle. The Monarch 6-24x50 comes in a Fine Crosshair with Dot. Maybe see if you can find one of those to look through.

Enjoy your new rifle!

I am a total newb to the rifle/scope target shooting sport and for my .22LR rifle I bought a VX-2 3-9X33 Rimfire scope, it was easy to sight in and so far it is working great.

I have 2 Monarchs, a 3-12x42, and a 5-20x44, and I prefer either to a VX-2. They track quite consistently , and are optically quite good for the price.

Nikon Monarch any good in low-light? I am looking at a Monarch 3 2-8x32 vs a Vortex Viper 3-9x40... wondering their compared performance since they hover around the same price.
