Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 BDC or Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 or Bushnell XLT 4-12x40?

Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 BDC or Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 AO BDC or Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 DOA-600? Looking for a cheap scope for 100-300 yard plinking and target shooting. These range in price from $240-260. No need for top of the line as I am not that good and neither is the rifle. Feel free to recommend others in this price range, this is just what caught my eye. Thank you.
 
Can't comment on the Vortex, never looked through one. I've got a Nikon Prostaff 5, but it's more money than the regular one. I also just recently put the exact Bushnell you're looking at on a 452 varmint .22lr. The Nikon is the better glass, but it costs a bit more. The Bushnell is also quite nice. I'm not entirely sold on the DOA reticle, or any reticle that isn't just a simple X type sight, at least for any kind of hunting. I find it too cluttered around the "target" area. It is VERY handy for target shooting and plinking however, as once you figure out the distances for the different aiming points you're good to go!

You can customize the Nikon BDC circles for your gun free on our Spot On app on our website, prints out a 3x3 chart with all the magnifications and yardages for all four circles. :)
 
If you can look through each one (at the same place so you can compare at one time) is best.

A few months back I was at the same place as you. I was comparing the Nikon Prostaff, the Bushnell Trophy and the lower end Leuopold.

I left the store with a Burris Fullfield E1 which blew them all away for clarity (as far as my eyes saw it) in the side by side comparison for scopes in the 250-300 buck range.

(and the Burris was not even a consideration before I went to look/compare)
 
Oh, what about the Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO? Only $150 on Amazon with free shipping. They used to get great reviews with the rimfire crowd. Can they handle the recoil of a .223/5.56?
 
Of the three in the original post, the Nikon gets my vote. Although not the model you mentioned, I do own a mueller scope and they are great value for the money spent. The concern I have with Amazon being the only Canadian source for mueller, what happens when and if you need warranty?

Nikon 100%. I'd rather buy a scope knowing it's good quality, than buy one knowing I can get it fixed when it inevitably breaks. Glass on the Nikon is nice and the Spot On program is pretty handy to use as well.

No it won't or at least mine didn't. My AR killed in less than 4 months with mild use. I bought it used so no warrant. Won't be buying another one from Mueller.

Link provided is great, I've literally just finished a new training manual for Cabela's Canada that they should all have in stores shortly. You will also start seeing our "No Fault Warranty" logo and copy in advertisements starting shortly. Any more questions please feel free to PM me.

Same here mine was junk right out of the box.Would not track at all cross hairs were not at 90 deg,complete junk sent it back and got my money back.I have a crossfire ii in 4x16 -50 it's not the clearest but tracks very well.
 
This is nice to know. I have a couple of Nikon scopes and binoculars, and I feel the quality, clarity and brightness are way above their price range. I would totally recommend Nikon to anyone. The website is great too, tons of data and information.
Are binoculars covered under this warranty as well?
