It's 2016, when I hear "at the same price point" I do go for a look.
This is a 400 buck scope (on sale from 500) from Nikon which now has a "no fault" warranty, so even if your run over the scope they will repair/replace (new for 2016).
This model (specs from Nikon) is:
4-16X42
1" tube
side focus
BDC 800 reticle
For 400 bucks what "else" could you get, especially from Leupold that's even "close" to those specs?
Well a 4-12X40 Rifleman, regular duplex with fixed parallax will run you 400 bucks. A 4-12X40 VX1 with a regular duplex and fixed parallax will run you $450 - if you want the same thing with with the LR duplex giving you the two holdover dots you better dig 500 bucks out of your pocket.
I like the Nikon glass - it's clear and once you get above their bottom end Prostaff line there is no focus issues at the higher magnifications. I just hate their reticles (other than the standard duplex) which stops me from owning any of their products that have BDC features.
But there is a fair bit packed into that scope that you would easily pay "double" for if you want to go with a Leupold.
That's why I don't understand when guys suggest Leupold - in 2016 a VX1 will run you 500 bucks if you want something more than the standard 3-9 offerings.
How about a VX2 - a decent scope - well a 4-12X40 with the windplex reticle is now a $770 scope (could almost buy two of those Nikon's and keep one as a spare).
With our buck in the tank if you are looking for "value for your money" Leupold is just not very high on the list right now.
Leupold is 100% American - so it's price fluctuates on a penny for penny basis with the value of the US buck - no insulation like most of the products produced "over seas". So if it was 400 bucks (at par) it's now $565 by today's fix and you don't get one added feature for that extra 165 bucks.
