I'm looking at Nikon scopes for my coyote rifle. What is the general consensus? I can get a prostaff 5 or 7 or a monarch 3 in my price range. Any pros and cons to any of these choices? They all come with the bdc reticle as an option. Zoom range would be in the 3-14 range with a 40-42 mm objective. Any other options I should look at in my price range? For what it's worth the scope will be replacing a vx-ii 3-9x40 on my 22-250.

I had a good look at the 2016 Nikon line-up at a recent buyers show.

Their new push for 2016 is their "no-fault" warranty, so even if you run the scope over with your vehicle they will replace it for you - good deal.

I looked at the pro-staff's back a while ago when looking for a scope. When I compared them side by side with a few other brands I (personally) found they lacked the clarity of others in/around the same price point - but that's a personal assessment.

The Monarch 3 has clear/brighter glass (again, my opinion) compared with the Pro-Staff line.

The M3 in a 3-12X42 with BDC generally sells for a little under 500 bucks ($480 at Cabela's - of course you can shop for price).

Although there are a ton of Leupold fans, a VX-2 with similar reticle and zoom will run you 200 bucks more and you aren't really getting 200 bucks "more scope".

I would suggest, in that mid-400 buck price point that you have a look at a Burris Predator Quest 4.5-14X42 - I find these to have superior clarity to the Nikkon's, almost identical features and the same warranty.

If you are stuck on Nikon, the Monarch 3 would be my choice - but if you can compare it side/side with a Burris Predator Quest, you may change your mind.

I bought a monarch III several months ago. For some reason I dis not like it so sold it at quite a loss. After a lifetime of scopes I will stick with leupold.

In the last half year Nikon scopes have made huge gains in sales in our shop and in some case matching Vortex volume. I have always liked Nikon and they have excellent warranty (that you almost never need) and excellent people including Travis who is on CGN. Phil.

Well that was a short search. Went to north pro sports this am and Kevin had some good deals on. Walked out with a prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 for under $350 before tax. Already have it mounted and ready to sight in. Seems like good clarity to me. Playing with the spot-on app right now. It's pretty cool.

I just put a M3 on the hunting rifle this last hunting season. Best scope for the price IMO. I really like the drop compensation reticle and the software for it.

The BDC reticle is one thing that I don't like about Nikon. I would much rather have regular hash marks instead of those silly circles.

I bought a Monarch 3 4-16x50mm for my 7mm MAG hunting rifle and the amount of light it lets in and clarity is impressive. It fell out of my gun boot on my quad, got scratched pretty good but held zero perfect. I would definitely buy another Monarch scope.

The Spot On app will give you a read out for the hashes, where the circles cross the Y axis on the reticle, if you aren't a fan of being in the circles. Simply click the "Expand BDC Circles" button right above the reticle image. This will print out for any magnification and you suddenly have 8 hashes and the bottom post. :)

What's the difference between the monarch 3 and prostaff 5 line?

I am very happy with my monarch 3 & original monarch.

I have several Monarch 3's in various styles. They are very good scope for the money. I also have Leupold VX 3's and Zeiss HD5's. The only real difference is that the Zeiss has it in zoom ratio (5:1 as opposed to 4:1 for Nikon & Leupold) and light clarity at dusk.

Just ordered a Nikon slughunter today for $175, have been wanting to upgrade the old prostaff currently on my slug gun for awhile even though its never had any issues. Not a fan of the circles but for slug appl. I think it will be ok. Had the circles on a monarch 6-24 and didn't like it much. Put a monarch 2.5-10 on my deer rifle after the season as I wasn't impressed with the Leupold for last light capabilities, although its been great for 8 years or so(eyes getting old I guess) Can't do much better than a monarch for $400.

It's not about the numbers, I just don't want to have to look at those silly circles.

Good choice, the prostaff 5 have lots of options and good value when on sale a bit, I bought one from him last year. Have picked up 3 more since and sold most of my 2-300 dollar scopes. I have all the reticle options and like the mildot of the 3. The BDC is ok but should be updated, it's too "tight" thick lines should be shorter and opened up more in the middle so to speak. Same deal when zeiss updated with the HD5 rapid z, much nicer than older conquests IMO.
My monarch is nice as well, Another one I kinda like is the Burris 4.5-14 x 42 C4 if ya want to dial.
