Hi all,

I'm pretty much clueless to long range shooting and its equipment, so I'm looking for some advice on purchasing a scope. I'm starting to see a lot of deals on Nikon rifle scopes. Since they are getting out of the rifle scope business, is it a bad idea to get a nikon or should I take advantage of the deals?

I'm pretty new to this, If I do decide to pull the trigger on a Nikon can anyone give me there thoughts on the Nikon PROSTAFF P5 and the Nikon MONARCH M5? If I can get either one for the same price which one should I choose? I'm looking for mainly a hunting rifle but also something that can double for a long range shooter in the off season.

Thanks,
Moro

Buy the Nikon. Great deals for sure. I would probably go for the monarch, but would depend on the reticle. A hunting scope will never be a good long range target scope. Maximum for hunting is 4x -12x variable. You're gonna want more magnification than that for long range target.

Nikon makes(made) solid scopes and good value. As for Prostaff P5 (1" tube) vs Monarch M5 (30mm tube), price is just one factor. Type of hunting, reticle type, weight, etc are all things to consider.

Average hunting-style scopes (ie stalking or just active) are generally very different than long range shooting disciplines as mentioned above. Exception would be something like long range hunting of big horn sheep and even then, portability of a long range precision, high magnification scope is a concern. But that's pretty moot perhaps given that both scopes are reasonably weighted hunting scopes.

The Monarch series is a grade above the Prostaff series, I'm surprised you state that you can get them for the same price. I have a Monarch 5 (one inch tube) - nice scope.

Probably not comparing direct type/models. ie lower magnification Monarch with simple reticle to a higher magnification, more complex reticle Prostaff. Otherwise there should be +/- $150 difference between similar models but with further discounts on these budget scopes due to Nikon getting out of scope-making, the prices are closer. The jump in tech isn't quite the same as other brand model lines, eg Vortex Viper vs Razor HD.

Just thought I`d relate my most recent experience regarding warranty on nikon scopes for anyone who is considering buying one. I recently purchased a nikon scope that was faulty right out of the box. Sent it to their service center in Mississaga,Ont. beginning of April.Sent numerous e-mails and made countless phone calls since then, never did get a response to the e-mails and always got a "recording" on the phone. Pretty much wrote the thing off but tried phoning one last time 3 days ago and actually got to talk to a person. He advised me that yes they had received it approx. 3 and a half months ago and that they were no longer in the scope business and had no scopes to offer me as a replacement, but they were prepared to offer me a different "product" up to the value of the scope, only because I had included the original receipt. I advised him that I was not interested in another product as I have everything I need, what I need is a scope and let him know I was less than impressed with the no response for 3 and a half months, to which he replied that they were busy.He told me he is just they customer service rep. and I would have to wait until I got an offer, as he called it, and then decide what to do. As of today, no scope, no "offer" and no response to my e-mails asking when I could expect their offer? ( I bought a new Leupold yesterday)

UPDATE: Got an e-mail from Nikon today offering me any Nikon product up to the value of the scope. I thanked them for the offer and advised them that I have everything I need and politely asked for a refund. We will see?

I like Nikon scopes but Nikon is no longer making them, so for that reason I would not buy one.

If you want a pretty decent scope, check out Athlon. I am pleased with mine.

Nice glass, nice finish, great options, and great bang for your buck.

Wow, guess I’m not on the fence anymore . No Nikon for this guy.
Thank you .

Still nothing from nikon to date.

I wouldn't hold your breath about getting a refund at this point.....
If you don't hear anything from them soon IMHO your best bet may be getting the best Nikon product you can from them and flipping it for cash. They have some nice digital cameras. Not what you want to do, I get that, but in the long run it's better than having a paper weight on your shelf.......
I have a couple Nikon scopes myself and I still have the receipts for them so if I ever have an issue with them, which I hope doesn't happen, I will be in the same boat as you. Good luck with this.

Thank you. I just several minutes ago, received a message from nikon telling me, " your request for a refund is under review". We will see. What is the most annoying is that I have to continually send e-mails and make phone calls to get any sort of response from them, worst CS ever. The wife has already advised me of the camera possibility and that will be option #2. Keep your receipts because the guy told me without them they will not even consider anything.

Interested in how this turns out for you.

What Nikon scope did you send to them and what was the problem with it?
Knock on wood, I haven't had any issues with my Nikon's to date. I realize now I have 3 of them, 2 I purchased new and still have receipts for and one I bought used on CGN.
With my luck it will be the used one I have no receipt for that $hit$ the bed on me............

Needed a cheaper scope to mount on a "Lender"(You know, son-in-law. grand-son thing) Bought a Prostaff 5 4.5-14x42 and right out of the box the parallax was totally in another world than the rest of the scope, so off it went. That is the 3rd nikon I tried and of the 3 only one was any good and that was the rimfire 4 x 32. The other one wouldn`t track worth a damm, total junk. I`ve tried Vortex and they were even worse.

Couldn't you return it to the point of purchase if it was defective from the very beginning?

Interesting. I expected this sort of scenario to play out with the Nikon warranty, but didn't expect it to happen so fast. I figured it would at least be a year or two before they couldn't actually repair/replace a scope.

That really sucks, I wanted to try a nikon but I guess I'll pass now...

I have a Nikon FX 1000 Black 6 - 24 x 50 illum. , I bought it a couple
years ago before they withdrew from scopes.

I have it mounted on my CZ 457 MTR and I really like it
no prob's xlnt all around scope.

That being said , I didn't buy it for or because of warranty
therefore IF I got a really good deal on another , I would
go for it .

You decide.... skwerl
