Leadman strikes again.

On a whim I stopped in at a tire store where I bought a tire from some time ago. Asked them what they did with their tire weights and they told me they drop them off at the local scrap metal place.

Told them I would pay them the same price :)

DING DING DING

Another supplier on my list.

Got to put your time and effort in :) Nil sine magno labore :Nothing without great labor

Hello Eck.
Didn't know you where so well versed in Latin:eek:

I am versed in google-foo :) Don't know how much they have. They were really busy, so I said I would stop in after "Snow Tire" season. So if I get more than I can handle, you are number one on the lead hotline.

Dave,
stop in sooner than later, it's Spring change over. A lot of drivers change Spring and Fall!

I have tried every CT store in my local area and they all said NO, and would not say why? Again, eastern Canada seems to do better than Western Canada when it comes to wheel weights, sad but true ! :(

Canadian tire and most dealerships are weird, really weird, when it comes to lead. The Ford dealership that I have dealt with for over 30 years would not sell me a single bucket.

Some sketchy shops who re-use their weights also get that "deer caught in the headlights" look when you ask them what they do with their scrap weights.

I keep stopping, I keep asking.

yah I was referring o the winter tires coming off, gonna stop in there in about a month

Well my wife stopped in at that place to have her brakes checked. They told her they wanted the weights gone.

Picked up 410 lbs today. :)

You know, I'm starting to dislike you as much as the guys bragging about their .22lr stash.

Relax. Just busting balls out of jealousy. :)

On a serious note, have you ever gone to scrap yards/metal recyclers to buy? Were they willing to sell to you?

I found a couple places around me online that say they buy lead wheel weights and other lead. I've sent emails with no response so I'll have to go over in person and see if they'll sell to me.

To be honest, I have found this whole "industry" hit or miss. Went to one scrap yard who said he had two pails but they were buried and that he would dig them out. Its a year and a half latter now.

I have about six people who have said they have lead or pewter buried in their garage that they would sell me. Still waiting. When I have a chance to grab some lead I grab it all. Worst case I can sell it to a person here for what I paid for it.

I'll stop posting my finds. Just trying to show that you have to work for it....almost daily. I try to take a different route home at least once a week. So far it has worked out for me.

In total I have rounded up over 2000lbs in the last year and a half. Some people have benefited from this as there was no possible way for me to process it all.

Still have another three garages to visit after tire change season

:)

oh and I am pushing about 50 pounds of pewter

Congrats on your constant lead sourcing ! Some people just seem to luck out when they stop in. Myself and several that I know strike out 99% of the time here in the west . I understand when people say to keep trying, but when your success rate sucks like ours does, why bother ! Again , congrats ! :)

When you start smelting, be fully protected. It isn't simply melting down a couple of pounds when you have to process a ton of material!

Nah, don't stop posting your finds.

It gives the rest of us having trouble finding some hope.

:)

No worries. I have been smelting as it cones in. A little at a time. I have a hot plate and a pot. Maybe end up with 18 lbs of clean lead per pot. I do a pot or two on nice days after work. No big production. I actually did all my soft soww in my wood stove over the winter.

I do several renos a year. All copper piping and wiring I remove goes in a pile. I take that pile (along with any brass I have collected that is unusable) to a scrap yard and trade it for lead. All to be used for dowrigger weights for fishing, right? Works well.

Don't stop posting your finds my friend! After seeing your success it motivates me to get out back out there and hunt again! I used to have more than I could handle when I worked in the Auto industry but pretty much gave up after the last 2 years only coming home with around 40lbs total after processing. This year lead is my challenge to collect (last year was .22lr)!
