anyone ever make up some targets and coat them with nitrogen triiodide? I think it would make neat targets that would explode into big purple puffs when hit..

Anyone know if its legal to make nitrogen triiodide in Canada? I've made it in my backyard as a kid, but I would be much more worried about the legality when my firearms are involved!

my idea is to paint 6" x 6" pieces of cardboard with the liquid mixture in the field. and then let them dry before shooting. was thinkin of puttin them from 100 - 300 yds, since the purple smoke should make spotting hits easy.

Oy! If you know what that stuff is, then I hope you also are aware of the immense need to BE CAREFUL! More schoolchildren's fingers are lost to that stuff than to garbage shop-class equipment!

I cannot even think of a license covering it, esp. if you're an "average joe". Fireworks it ain't.

Been there...;)

Duly noted.:)

We call 'em reactive targets, son. I just again caution that those things can be set off by a feather - yes, I know what I'm saying - incredibly unstable stuff.;)

In any event, do NOT leave those targets lying around - CAREFULLY dispose after each use, and be sure to watch them as they dry, if you do make any. Again, be safe first, have fun second.

Yikes... not something I'd mess with, and I'm a tinkerer from time to time with such things. There are plenty of shock-sensitive mixtures which are MUCH safer to handle and just as easy to make; "t3h in+3rn3+z0rz" is your friend.

tannerite would be awesome, easy to make, just not sure I want to deal with the potential issues of people who might not like you in possesion of somthing explosive ie LEO's

check this out, tannerite in an Elmo doll at a gun range

takes them a bit to finally hit the right sot, but HI-larious when the do!

If you compare the sensitivity of nitrogen triiodide to nitroglycerin, the nitroglycerin would be considered a really safe and stable compound.

Making this stuff (NI3) is just silly - Buddy of mine was distilling it through his moms coffee machine (to get the crystals) and blew up the coffee machine and left a nice purpley black spot on the wall (his mom was ticked) - NI3 will blow you to pieces if your not careful.

I recommend pre-fab reactive targets to be fun and safe.

The following topics will not be tolerated. Violation will result in immediate and permanent suspension. Some quasi legal/ grey/downright illegal examples that are specifically not tolerated are:

1. Shipping and driving items to Canada from the US that require US export permit.

2. Discharging firearms in places where firearms are not allowed to be discharged.

3. Manufacture or use of flammable and explosive substances or “tracer” projectiles.

4. Unblocking 5 rd magazines to regular capacity.

5. Swapping non-restricted barrel for restricted barrel at gun range.

6. Home made firearms with illegal or misleading markings. For example, marking a chunk of metal with "Valmet 78".

7. Solicitation of unregistered firearms or magazine kits.

:) i was hopin that the manufacturing would stay out of this thread so it wouldnt get locked.

i think its just a dumb idea...
anyone know the legality of tannerite in canada? im guessing ordering the kits from the states is a no-go since it has a chemical in it used for making drugs and big booms...

definately dont want to be breakin the law (or the rules of this board!). just lookin for something cheap to shoot at from a distance that will provide a noticeable "Hit" with my rimfires. cans work, but i dont like picking up all that garbage. was hoping to find something that would pretty much disappear after being shot. and that isnt a major fire/ safety hazard.....

but i think ive got the info i was lookin for, so lock away if you must ;)

Can Iodine crystals even be purchased now...

If you make it...make sure you spread it thin when the batch is finished and still nice and wet...the weight of a dried pile of this stuff can make it self detonating

Use a paper cup full of water for reactive targets...the paper is at least bio degradeable and you won't lose any fingers setting up a row of them.
