NM Front Post Height

Okay, here's the poop on the front height regarding NM and match conditions....

The manual specifies that your rear sight should come up about 10 to 15 clicks from bottoming out (absolute bottom, we called it). What I will do is set my rear aperture 10 clicks high and start filing down the front sight post (always keep spares in case you mess up). Many on our team would leave the front sight post alone once we obtained the correct height for a 100m zero 10 clicks from the bottom.

Well here's yours truly; I wanted a super low cheek weld for the 200 yard off hand position so I filed down my front sight so much that my rear aperture was only SIX clicks from absolute bottom. :D

I was happy until I ran out of IMR4895 powder shooting 168's. Then our coach recommended that we all shoot 43.0 gr W748 launching the 168 gr Sierra MK or Hornady HPBT's. D'oh! :( My new loads shot way toooo high! :suck:

Now I was in trouble and my sights were messed. I filed off too much.... Whooops!

Lesson learned. Just file down enough to obtain 10 clicks. Now ONLY do this if you compete (Not just shooting at the bench at 100m targets) at Service Rifle matches! Most of you don't so put that file back down on the workbench!

WARNING: Do this only if you have a spare front sight to mess up! Been there, done that!

Cheers all!

Hungry my problem is that this saturday to Sheila to the Connaught D Range for another NCRRA sevice rifle shoot. This shoot was at the 300m line, with the rear sight set at 3 my first shot was 10m in front of the 200m line, rear sight to 4, 2nd shot in 200m line, and etc... until the rear sight set at one click more than the 9 the groups where at head lvl on fig 11/59.

So Mr. Bill Martyn noticed that my front sight seemed to tall and that he would check his NM M-14 (real one) to confirm.

Just making sure.....:D
