No. 4 Long Branch

I just picked up a No. 4 Mk. 1* Long Branch and have a question about the forestock. Directly on the bottom near the nose cap is a hole about a half inch round. The hole is empty and you can see the barrel through it. Unfortunatly I can't take any pictures at this time but was wondering if any of you had an idea why it's there. I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything like it.

Thanks for the reply. Any idea where I could get a long branch stock for it as most of the parts are long branch with the exception of the nose cap. Also would a long branch have a steel or brass butt plate?
 
shilo44M, it wasn't uncommon for No4 rifles to have parts replaced with non matching maker's wood or other parts during FTR. (factory thorough repair). Your rifle isn't incorrect. Many FTRs were done to these rifles and no markings were made to show this. The only indication of the FTR or even field repair, would have been the replacement stock or whichever part was changed out. Not a big deal, unless it's blond and everything else is beech or walnut. Even that isn't unusual. Not appealing to the eye though.
 
Thanks Bearhunter. The stock looks good and is all matching (colour I mean) but as I mentioned earlier has this big hole in the bottom. Other than that it fits well and the finish looks good.

LB forends are not common. If the wood is good and all matches, I'd consider plugging the hole tastefully with a good wood repair.

Most of what's out there for wood is Pakistani wood, or Indian wood with Ishapore screws, not quite in the same league.
