Looking at a rifle which is all matching...receiver, bolt, stock. Mag is a different number. Very good shape overall and complete. Rear flip up marked with "S". Has a two groove barrel which is bright. Question...is there an easy way to judge the quality of the rifling? Dealer has it and it is going to be $400.00 with taxes. Price?,,,,too much?

I have an excellent, all matching Savage that did not see issue. I wouldn't take less than $500 for it..... If you plan to shoot it, the non-matching serialized mag shouldn't matter much.
If she is in excellent shape, $400 is reasonable (considering the current market).
The days of excellent $200 Enfields are gone.

well yes prices are going uplike crazy but $350 for the standard run of the mill No4 is reasonable.

Yes, it is too much....but that is the MINIMUM asking price now for an all-matching No4Mk1*. If you don't want to pay $400, you won't go home with the rifle, because somebody else will pay $400.
Just a word of caution...there are some very industrious people out there who are jumping on this latest Lee-Enfield sales bonanza, offering parts-bin rifles that have been tarted up to look better than they are. If buying on the 'net, be sure to ask the right questions, even if they have a trader rating higher than Roberto Luongo.

I paid $400 for a Savage and it was a very good shooter. It was practically devoid of markings, I have just recently learned that they made a bunch of rifles from parts.

I just paid $500.00 for an unissued, unfired and all matching example two months ago. I’m with Woodchoper on this one. $350.00 is more in line.(quibble over $50.00 bucks?? You decide) If it were a Long Branch on the other hand or we were in the US I’d say grab it.
Finish on rifle.....
Tiriaq, it looks just like normal bluing...not the painted on finish that I think you are talking about. What is this EE that everyone is talking about? I'm just beginning to pick up some of this era rifle so am not as conversant with the sites and terms as I am with pre-1900 rifles. This guy won't budge on prices at all and....he showed me a nice piece that he had taken in...I mentioned that I had one at home and would he take it in trade...a Winchester Model 62A in great condition....and he said no! No trades accepted...no discounts. What can I say? I do like him and respect his knowledge. If I can't make a trade then I will keep having more and more and more....well, you know.

EE = Equipment Exchange here at CGN. The m/m magazine isn't a big problem, the number just happened to be on a replacment magazine. If the rifle is a really nice one, $400 taxes in (darn near $50 just in taxes) isn't too bad, no bargain, basically a high retail. By the same token, could you easily resell it without taking a loss? For $400, the rifle should be really nice, not just a clean used rifle with normal wear and tear. I think I'd have trouble talking myself into a $400 Savage Mk. I* unless it was pretty special.
