No bear defense threads in a long while with a good video

Watch the video!! and listen for the sound of the shot. Related to the Sows position. Then think - there's probably a pickup truck just off camera.

Yeah, there's a ton of roads on the Alaskan tundra.

I thought he shot to soon on the sow.

Haha, you have balls of iron. At the range he was being charged in the video I woulda' learned how to bump-fire in a hurry nevermind worry if I'm firing too soon.;)

From the stories I've read about people that fire too late, they die or have to rely on their buddies to kill the bear because they're a rag doll in its mouth.:(

Great video clip! I have to agree that the guide made all the right steps. I don't know if I personally would have let it get close enough to hit with the end of my rifle but man, he squeezed off the one that counted, when it counted!

That is just about the stupidest thing I've seen on here for a while. Reminds me of the beware of dog sign I saw once - "I can make it to the gate in 4 seconds - CAN YOU?"

You can tell the guide was visibly upset by the incident, and you can be sure that if he thought he had an option rather than dumping the sow he would of. As for shooting too soon - look how far the sow travelled before dropping - I've seen it happen the other way - where they don't turn.

That was a great video. Had it been me in that position, I'm sure I would have sh*t my pants!:runaway:

I am working on the ultimate bear defense gun now: it is a side by side rifle, chambered in .22 Short in one barrel and .600 Nitro in the other. How it works is very simple - you bean said bear in the buttocks with the .22 Short from behind. When he turns around to see what all the fuss is about, you nail him between the eyes with the .600 Nitro!:dancingbanana:

Anyone willing to try it out?:D

Okay... I've watched the video several times... IMHO, they did it right, they had no choice... and the "distance" that they pulled the trigger at is irrelevant...

IF that bear was 12 or 15 or 20 or 25 METERS away, most of us would have shot... these guys shot at 12 FEET, about 4 meters!!!

It is sad to know that the sow was just doing what came natural, protecting her cub... she paid for that instinct with her life and unfortunately, the cub likely died at the hands of a boar or starvation...

Cheers
Jay

Sorry for having an opinion..

They said the bear was 12 yards away.

I'd shoot the thing at 25 yards away if it was charging at me like that.

Its also a brown bear... which if i am not mistaken (correct me if I am wrong) it is an aggressive bear.

Browns are grizzly bears, and grizzlies defense mechanism is to act aggresively towards threats, since they rarely have the option of climbing a tree, like a black bear:)

(Although grizzlies do climb trees sometimes, just not very well):runaway:

Black bears account for more attacks on umans than grizzlies, of course.

Same as your opinion that *all* bolt actions are Mausers.

Useless....:)
It's to bad that all bolt actions aren't Mauser's. The world would be a better place.

What I find interesting is that he was able to turn the charge. I think that is a fine example of the advantage offered by a large diameter, heavy bullet at 2000+ FPS.

Certainly Time for a Shorts change........
Those Guys did a Hell of alot more then Most would have done before the shot was fired, no Doubt about it:cool:
I Fancy myself an "Experienced" hunter......
But I'd have $hit myself:)
