Well, yeah. You’re right. Dumb rule. But what were you hunting wolves/coyotes with before? 223? You were already breaking the old dumb rule.


Edit: Just so we’re clear I don’t mean that accuseatorily. Most folks had no clue the 400 rule existed.

To be honest, never gave it much thought since 99% of my hu ting was done in the Niagara peninsula area. Since i just bought property up north, this will be my first year in a looooong time hunting up north.
 
Before everyone gets all flamed out, this is a minor change. Originally under the Game and Fish Act and then the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, the limitation was that you couldnt possess a rifle larger than a 22 LR during the open big game season unless you had an appropriate big game tag in your possession. Meaning you couldnt carry a 22 mag.

When 17 HMR was introduced, the reg was changed to allow firearms up to 400 ft lbs. energy. As mentioned in a previous post, no way for a CO to check the muzzle energy on a downloaded centre fire rifle.

The new reg makes it simple for everyone -you can only possess a rimfire rifle during an open big game season (remember bear season opens August 15) unless you have an appropriate big game tag in your possession.

Well, it does affect the mouse farters and the pistol carbine guys. Pistol carbines seem to be gaining popularity, and I know of at least 2 folks who use 9mm for all their small game needs, and it comes in under the 400 rule.

True enough and I have a JR carbine as well. But unless a CO had a ballistics table downloaded (and there isnt cell service in large tracts of where the reg applies to), this reg change makes it easier for everyone.

Agreed. And maybe it open a slice of the market to resurrect 5mm mag or a more powerful rimfire?...

Yeah, although I wish they would have just scrapped the whole silly rule. I don’t see how it protects wildlife, and in a way, it shows a level of favoritism to big game hunters. Essentially, coyote/wolf hunters just have to “sit out” those weeks, even though their license/tag allows them to hunt during that time. Not really fair in my opinion.

Nah, good excuse for yote hunters to pony up for a nice .17 or some other snappy rim fire, or pattern the old 12 gauge and go hunting. Just shorter range.
You are right, a poacher is gonna poach, but I imagine it makes enforcement of some big game laws difficult if someone can use the small game hunting excuse.
