Before everyone gets all flamed out, this is a minor change. Originally under the Game and Fish Act and then the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, the limitation was that you couldnt possess anything larger than a 22 LR during the open big game season. Meaning you couldnt carry a 22 mag.
When 17 HMR was introduced, the reg was changed to allow firearms up to 400 ft lbs. energy. As mentioned in a previous post, no way for a CO to check the muzzle energy on a downloaded centre fire rifle.
The new reg makes it simple for everyone -you can only possess a rimfire rifle during an open big game season (remember bear season opens August 15) unless you have an appropriate big game tag in your possession.
