Anybody have a suggestion for a sling attachment to a rifle I don't want to drill into?

I have my old Savage 99 that was my grandfather's and I don't want to drill swivels into it. I just want a basic carrying sling for carrying in American carry.

Anybody found a good sling that attaches with a barrel clamp or leather strap or velcro or whatever that doesn't need a swivel attachment?

Thanks.

Barrel bands do work but will undoubtably leave a mark. A barrel band also is another item that will effect barrel harmonics, due to where it sits.

There are however slings designed that have loops that you slip over the barrel, and around the stock wrist.

Who makes that quick sling that sort of loops around the stock and allows you to carry across your chest and it pops back over to allow for quick shouldering?

No drilling with this setup.

Just couldn't resist. :D

I am really glad that you are not taking your grandfathers rifle and adding sling studs. There are enough vintage 99's that have been modified that if you really needed to you could find one with studs already. Here is link to a fellow in the US that makes slings for lever guns. Some really nice stuff and I have been told by some guys that his stuff is top notch.

You want old school, try these:

Of course, you are welcome to use a wider sling than this. The chap that used this set up was hardcore, from stories I've heard I doubt he knew what pain was. lol

There are at least some period pics for you to see what the trappers did in the day.
Get some heavy leather boot lace, treat it with some bear or sheep fat and tie it on for the sling loops. After that use the sling of your choice. The butt could have a leather slip over sleeve I guess too.
Hope this helps.

swivels for 99's

I don't know why but 99% of people will put a swivel hole in a savage forestock. There is already a hole, use it , it's holding the forestock onto the barrell, all you have to do is replace it with a machined screw with a swivel head on it bingo a swivel with no extra hole. So thats only one hole you need to make in the shoulder stock which means if your not going to carry it on a sling carry it in your hands which will wear the blueing anyway . If your using it for hunting you might as well put a sling on it or keep it in the closet. Or take off the butt plate and screw somthing into the stock and cover it with a pad there are 2 holes under the butt plate already. Damn if I ever find a savage with no swivel holes I think I'll try that myself, the shoulder stock part, and when your done hunting put the butt plate back. Cheers.

Any savage in my cabinet only has the factory studs / slings swivels. Every other one that is not suppose to have them, doesn't. Just have to turn over a few more rocks! They are out there. Any I have a few and they go back quite a few years, almost all with condition! ;)

forestock swivel hole clarification

I guess I should of worded my sentence correctly, 99% of people who will put a swivel on a savage make a second hole instead of using the existing hole for the forstock. I did not say that 99% owners of a savage will put the second hole for a swivel. Almost all collectors will not even think about putting an extra hole into a savage period.
