I am looking into buying an SKS (tommorow) and I have a thought. That thought would be to buy one decent one with a nice stock, ect and keep it as is. Then further down the road, buy another one and turn it into a "Tactical" looking rifle by putting a synthetic stock and a optical sight on it. Now, as you can tell by my name, I am into milsurps and do not want to ruin a milsurp by drilling for a mount. So I had a boo at Marstars website and they have a No gunsmith mount that replaces the rear sight. How are these? I read the part about scoping the SKS on one of the stickies and it said that they have to be removed to remove the gas tube. Anyone have any experience with them?

I don't know how exports work on firearm accessories but I like to use cheaperthandirt.com for all my accessory needs. They have just about everything for scope mounts, scopes, rails, for all firearms such as SKS's, Mosins, M4/AR/M16, etc... It's a pretty easy to navigate website.
Here is a link for an SKS mount kit. Just attach a regular scope to it and you are good to go. Take the old bolt housing off and attach the new one with the pre-assembled scope mount. That is pretty ### tho if you ask me. I could understand mags and such... but a scope mount?!

If you are not prepared to drill and tap a scope mount on your SKS, the only one you should consider is at scoutscopes.com This is the only one that hold a consitant zero. I have tried the other so called no gunsmithing mounts and as far as I am concerned they are a waist of money.
The one I am looking at I believe is from Scoutscopes.com. I have read nothing but bad things about the ones that go on the receiver cover.
If my memory serves me correct all you would have to remove is the optic
to remove the gas tube. Even if the whole mount comes off, the company
says it will stay zero........
Gas tube is in the same boat as receiver mounted bases. To much play involved, From what I have read.
the scout scope scope mount is the only way i have found to solidly mount an optical sight. however i use a red dot sight or a halosight which are much shorter than a traditional scope. the rings mount to a picatiny rail with a groove in the center that can be used as the rear iron sight. i realy like mine. mine is a norc sks so it doesn't realy have any collector value. but i don't like ugly rifles either and the sks is butt ugly in its stock form. i have the ram line sporter stock and a red dot sight on the scout scope mount. cleaning is as simple as usual but with the added step of removing the scope from the p-rail.
I have a reciever cover mount that I have been using for 5 years and it works fine. I bought it new and fitted it to receiver by filing down the length of the tabs. The end result is a very tight fit that requires a punch to seat the lock. Not perfect but good enough to hit our 200 yard gong and even clays on the berm at that same distance. The zero is almost repeatable with only a few clicks on the scope to be back on
