No hunting for me

I went for my renewal a full 6 months before I had to, as a result of info I read here.
My renewal came in a few weeks.
Our group lost one of our moose hunters last year, when he was too late applying for his renewal. He forgot to notify the CFO he had moved and the renewal notices went to his old address and were not forwarded on.

Best advice: Apply early. The dates run from your old PAL to the normal anniversary, i.e. your birthday so there is no real advantage to waiting until the last minute.

I thought they send notification that you are about to expire, along with renewal forms... how soon before expiration do these things come?

My pal expires near the end of September, and I have not seen any notification yet.

Even so, I decided not to wait, and applied around the end of April - that's a good 5 months before it expires. You would think that is enough time.

It's been about 60 days now....hopefully it is completed soon.

Popcan - i had a similar problem a ways back, and the CFC told me that as long as they were processing it and i'd had one that the police wouldn't give me any trouble for it. Now - i don't know if that's 100 percent the case but it'd be worth asking (and then maybe ask a local rcmp officer). But it sounds reasonable - if you had a license, you've applied for the new license and they're just taking their time, I doubt any cop in bc would give you too rough a time over that.

At the VERY least if it comes down to it - if they've processed your renewal but have not yet got your license out to you (which can take several weeks sometimes) then get your new number from them and you can give that as proof you are licensed properly.

The best way to get fast results is as mentioned phone you MP. Tell them when you sent it in and if the PAL expires you are in violation of the Criminal Code, and you could be charged, not because it was your fault but the fault of the system. A while back we had a thread on how a wife could be charged if she knew where the keys for your guns are and she did not have a PAL? If your PAL is expired you can not pocess a firearm. I would say 99.9% of the time you will not be charged or have any problems but there are some officers that will charge their own mother. My PAL was renewed in three weeks. The one time it was about to expire and I phoned my MP and it was there within a week ( because of what I did for a living). My friends PAL expired and the CFC contacted him to register his firearms into a PAL friends possession (thats me) or give them to the police for disposal. You will always hear of horror stories like being forced by the Liberals to give up your guns or do you feel lucky?.

Sorry about your luck.

All kidding aside. As much as he would hate to do it; imagine the back lash he could get for not helping his constituant with a legit problem.

He could also spin it around to his favor, by stating that it's the Conservative's fault as they are the government and they are not meeting their stated service standard.

I used to think that as well , but when my dad's pol expired, ,i got my pal, and that took 3 months, after i got the pal, they still transferred the gun from him to me , they told me that the rifle was still registered to him , even tho the pol expired , and that had we not transferred the rifle after about 6 months they would send a letter asking him to either renew or dispose of the gun thru what ever legal means he chose (ie turn in for destruction, or sell) they said ,, that till then even tho the pol had expired he still had the rifle registered to him, but that he was in violation of the law as well , go figure

Yeah I have not figured that out. By the letter of the law your dad was in possession of unregistered firearms, however obviously just because your license expires all your guns aren't deleted from the system. They can't go around throwing everyone in jail for expired licenses so they send threatening letters and allow you to register guns which are technically no longer of legal status.

By the letter of the law your dad should be awaiting a trial. Just because it is so horribly written that no one wants to enforce it doesn't technically change what the law says.
