I have several parcels of land and have insurance on all of them. I just recently bought a 100 acres and the insurance company told me there is no coverage while engaged in hunting activities. I can not believe this! All existing properties seem to be covered but any new business is not. Anyone else run into this situation? What did you do?

Thanks in advance

I can not help with any experience, but would maybe ask a few questions. For what "peril" does your insurance policy now cover on your previously owned land? Who is covered? No coverage for who? or for what? while engaged in hunting - who is hunting? where? Sometimes some insurance policies, like on your house, might provide third party liability coverage for your activities away from your house - is this what is occurring? "Third party liability" - as when someone else successfully sues you for something that you have done. If a hunter, on your land, sets fire to the grass or bush and burns down your stuff - you have suffered a loss - is this the insurance coverage that you have?

Time to get quotes from a new insurance company. Sometimes insurance companies do stuff like this if the property is being operated as a business. My neighbour recently told me that his insurance company would no longer insure his house because he installed solar panels. Apparently that insurance company deems the solar panels as a business activity because they generate an income....first I’ve heard of that...

Same situation here in-regards to the property, I belong to the CCFR, CCSA and NFA I believe they cover me for hunting activities, am I wrong?

It is actually getting quite common now. Many are classing hunting as reckless endangerment same as (e.g. if you die racing a car), or if you die while committing a crime. In situations like this, you are not covered
You have to keep shopping
All the best

Go in and fight it. I got a letter from my insurance stating my truck wasnt covered unless it had factory sized rims and tires on it. I had the tire company call and hound them and i went in person. Turned out good. Got a rider for any after market rims on that truck and got 5% discount

Most tell you to go pound sand from my experiences with them unless your company is like this which is sounds yours is
Cheers

A standard car insurance policy is meant to cover the car for its currently appraised value, but such coverage does not generally include after-market equipment. If you bought the car with a set of factory rims, they would be included in the coverage, but if you modified the car by adding your own rims, you would need to purchase additional coverage for them.

To insure your custom rims, you have the option of increasing the coverage on your current policy or purchasing additional coverage solely for the rims. Shopping for a new policy that includes your rims as part of the full vehicle value is another option, and may offer you additional benefits and savings as well.

If you can’t make headway with them re hunting activity get outside liability coverage specific to hunting and outdoor activity if you feel the need for it. Out west our BCWF membership comes with liability coverage for hunting etc, it also satisfies the requirements for quad and atv insurance. I get it with my range membership so it cost me nothing extra as I always have a range membership.

On top of the insurance I carry for my land I also ask that any hunters or trappers carry their own insurance. OFAH and CSSA being acceptable. Contact the Ontario Woodlot Association OWA about liability insurance.
Cheers,
GJG

Funny thing about after market wheels.
Replacing OEM are usually more $$ than after market chit.
Go figure.
At least this is what I.C.B.C. told me when a family member hit a deer.

I just got a quote on house insurance but the company won't cover professionally installed wood stoves and they're trying to do business in the BC Interior. What a joke!

Call around, I used one insurance company for everything, bought more farmland with a house and shop. Phoned them up and their pricing was 3.5x what i was expecting. Ended up dropping them for all but my vehicles, but spoke to the owner/broker where i was exclusively dealing with, and said insurance company had cost him a lot of business, as a tonne of farmers walked away.

But that is because ICBC insists on buying at jacked up rates, which the suppliers are happy to push even higher, because, well, ICBC has a lot of other peoples money, so they don't seem too sad about spreading it around.

We inquired about getting permission to hunt a property a couple years ago, and the owner said his insurance would not cover him if hunting was allowed. We wrote it off as just an excuse to keep hunters off, which was his perogative any way. No point arguing with him about it, but it wasn't something we had ever heard of.

I got my house insurance through OFAH. Between the OFAH and my insurance company I am covered on the acres I bought last year. Once I put up my trapper shack I will have to get separate insurance
