I've been given that worn out old excuse by the local supplier for bullets, primers, and powder. The truth is more likely that the locals, like ours here, don't want to be troubled with small sales of materials that they have a hard time getting across the border economically. I buy primers in case lots now, powder by the 'keg', and bullets in 1000 lots. Funny thing about the military pre-empting excuse is that the military doesn't use varget powder or match grade primers.

Absolute complete and utter bull####. I've also heard this excuse for a lack of 45acp stock - told to a young fellow while I was waiting in line for service at the local sporting goods shop. He questioned the salesman about it (as you should)- seeing as Nato doesn't exactly run much 45auto... and the saleshonky shot back that "US special forces do" and that's why there was none. No UMC, no Amer-eagle, no Winchester, no nothing. Ya, I'm sure those special forces dudes are using crappola el cheapo over the counter ammo. The young customer looked over and we both  did one of those  . Where's the icon for 'boatload'?:onCrack:

Its called poor planning and lack of interest in keeping the shelves stocked. Also called laziness, stupidity, or perhaps just a busy season. Why they feel the need to lie to people is beyond me. Call his supplier and ask them. Then call Remington, CCI, or whoever makes the primers of your liking and ask them if the army transport trucks have all left yet.

I wonder if the next time I go in for some .204Ruger they'll say the army has it all?

I was at Lawry's in Calidonia just before Christmas. They had a warehouse full of skids stacked 4 ft high, full of cases of Federal primers. Sad to say no Fed210m in stock:(

Earlier this week, I tried half a dozen major retailers in western Canada looking for Winchester bulk .308 rifle bullets, 147 grain FMJ BT. None were able to support my request. I was told that "George W" bought out the whole supply. What a hog!! Well I guess he has a lot of 7.62x51mm to reload.

You are right, the military does not use varget powder or match grade primers, but the component companies use all of their resources to satisfy their largest clients which is military. You don't get your primers and powder choice because the componet companies look at the shooting sports as small potatoes. On the other hand, most retailers are as frustrated as your are and to retailers, you are big potatoes!

I have the oportunity to speak to several retail store owners and factory reps about this issue. In addition to the blame the military excuse which though sounding like bull####, I have heard another exuse!

The way it used to be! There was a standing deal between all major suppliers in US (Rem, CCI, IMR, Hogdon, all the biggies, you get the idea) that they would send as much as needed to Canadian suppliers and would keep sending til need was met.

The way it is now! The US now requires a permit for each and every order no matter how large or small and a hugh pile of red tape that has to be cut to get the stuff accoss the border. A case of primers or a truck load requ1re the same amount of red tape. Gun parts require more red tape than guns. With all the hoops that a retailer has to go through, one large order is simpler than many smaller orders. Large retailers have to put up with the unpleasant task of dealing with pissed off customers. Smaller retailers and smith simply can not afford to jump through the hoops and go out of business.

George W personally does not horde that much ammo on his ranch, but he is directly responsible for the shortage of large rifle primers for sale in Canada.

About as close to the truth as we'll get on this topic is this...

With the increased military orders, commercial requirements are not being supplied in a timely manner. Smaller stores and distributors are either not getting stock, or getting partial orders on some product lines. Others are finding that they have to order skid loads to ensure priority, and are either selling out quickly when the word gets out, or passing on the larger orders.

This too will pass.

If in BC, try these guys - Aubrey White , Powder Keg (Merritt), Del Selin.
