I see a few dealers are now selling the FN SPR rifles, but I don't see a lot of info about them on the forums. They look interesting but definitely carry a hefty price tag. From what I can tell, they seem to be tuned up Winchester model 70 actions?

Anyway, I haven't been able to fins any good discussion of them on this forum so I thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone had any good info on them. I was originally getting ready to buy a Tikka Tac but now I'm wondering if it is worth the extra $1500 or so to go with one of these?

I'm primarily looking to shoot at 500 m and under, but as I improve I have no doubt that I may want to reach out farther... I', also thinking .308 for caliber; unless you guys want to talk me out of it for a compelling reason... ;)
 
Just got to shoot one the other day. It's very nice. The barrel starts it's life as an M240 machine gun barrel blank, its chrome lined, and has a factory gaurantee of .5 moa for 10000 rounds.
 
They want $3500 for them IIRC. If you shop around you can get a Sako TRG for that or less. The FN is a great rifle I'm sure but is it in the same league as a TRG?

No, the TRG trigger is far better, I have yet to find another rifle has a trigger as good, no even my AI.
I regret selling my TRG, saw a like new green trg on EE few days ago, fully kitted for $3600

That's interesting. Sounds like a great barrel. Oddly, from what I have read on the dealers' sites, the gun is guaranteed to be MOA accurate. Which seems a little underwhelming for a $3500 rifle. no?

I don't think I have seen even a used TRG for under $5k. I suppose if I could find one for $3500, it would be no contest then!
 
I bought my brand new TRG last year for $3020 before tax. It's the blued barrel version but whatever I'll get it cerakoted one day. Prices have gone up but I bet there are still TRGs out there for $3500 or less.
 
Thanks for the TRG info, Shabazz and Familygunnutz! Looking back, I have no idea where I was getting my TRG pricing info but it is clearly out of whack. Maybe I was seeing prices for the folding stock version? But id the TRG is in the same price range as the SPR then that is probably the better choice, no?
 
Not to derail my original question, but now that i see the prices of TRGs I have to ask; who is stocking them these days? A quick perusal of some sponsor's sites has turned up nothing so far... :(
 
I bought one in early spring this year and don't have much bad to say. I got the A1 with 24" non fluted barrel for 2300 and for how it shoots well worth it. First the good, it came with the test target with a 1/2" group and this was no lie it shot the same with 168gr hornady match, and better yet with handloads. With the heavy barrel it takes a good 15 shots to even warm up the barrel, and no noticable change of impact from the cold bore. The stock is as solid as you could want, and bedded recoil lug and rear tang with some sort of acrylic which is not the best but seems to work. Now the bad, the magazine design will not allow for top loading so you have to push the cartridges down while you feed the next base first. It makes chambering rounds extremely controlled and reliable but a bit of a pain in the rear. Next is the old style winchester trigger, it is not the new MOA system at least not on my model. A very little bit of cleanup and polishing did it wonders however and it now breaks clean at about 2 lbs. So anyway there's the love, good luck on your choice.
 
Thanks for the first-hand feedback FRG. The A1 is in the same price range as the Tikka Tac. So that should make for some interesting comparisons. The accuracy of your SPR does ssinf impressive for the price. I see that Wolverine has the A1 in stock on their website. The other dealers seem to have the more expensive A5M XP version. Wonder what the extra $1200 gets you other than the cheek riser?

Can easily find a TRG either 22 or 42 for mid 2 grand used.
