No Milsurp 7.62x39 Allowed @ Malahat

If you can't reload it, some people don't care...also, I don't imagine the steel cases are worth anything in bulk.
Maybe as scrap metal, especially with the crazy metal prices these days.

I take your point, just saying that some people look at milsurp like they do about rimfire brass - shoot a lot of it and forget about it. Doesn't make it right, but we can always start another thread about dog owners not picking up poo...

Given the location of the club I think its probably not a bad idea to be concerned about the possibility of fire, the media would love to lead the evening news with "gun club causes inferno"

Looks like I will get a Bulk Water Truck up there with a sprayer and hose the whole place down.

First me and Disaster Monkey are chased out of the Multi-Puropse Pistol Range by the IPSC guys, We had to wait for the Black Powder people to finish on the other range. And I was half Expecting the Trap shooters to come down and shoo us away.

Get me a chainsaw I'll cut a new road for the JDF Range it's closer to my House Anyway.

"...files or grinds off the copper jacketing from the tip of the bullet..." This does nothing. It's still got a thick jacket. Some milsurp bullet jackets are mild steel. Hence the sparking on rocks. Mind you, a copper jacket can cause sparks too. You'd have to be very unfortunate for a jacket spark, of any kind, to stay lit long enough to start a fire though.
"...AND corrosive ammo..." I'd like to hear their reasoning for that one. Do they think corrosive priming is contagious? Not all milsurp uses corrosive primes either.
"...it will start fires quite quickly..." Trace does not start fires unless the grass is very, very dry and the trace element gets into said grass before it goes out.

Goin' up there this afternoon to sight in my "target shotgun"....cylinder bore with sights. And, since it is overcast today, with some splatters of light rain yesterday morning, the Malahat fire hazard should be reduced to the point that I can shoot skeet with slugs in my slugun ..... provided I stay away from those Remington solid copper things.
TTFN ... time to actually go out and burn a bit of powder.

LAZ 1

I arrived at JDF once right after some one had started a grass fire with surplus 7.62X39 in a VZ 58 it went out right away but it did leave a large burnt patch down range.

There has been small fires started at the Malahat range. Steel cored bullets (like most of the Norinco rifle ammo) bouncing of steel gongs is suspect. This is the only reason and I'd say during fire season it is reasonable.

Left casings are trash, what's particularly nasty about the steel stuff is that it's hard on lawn mowers.

Lead cored FMJ should be less likely to start fires.

As for being kicked off the range or having another discipline to finish on the range, phone ahead or read the schedule. If you don't like the way the club works show an interest and I'm sure you will be welcome on next years exec.

If your lazy and don't give a #### about tidyness of your clubs range and property, by all means go somewhere else.

The Norinco 7.62x39 is lead core, and should be acceptable.

Before visiting the range on the day in question I checked my printed newsletter, the online schedule AND I phoned into the information line. Not one of those suggested that the multipurpose range was rented for that day. Beyond that, in a conversation I had had with the caretaker in person, I was advised that even when there is a rental at the multipurpose range, at least one bay would be available for drop in shooters. I had been told this the previous time when I showed up and found the rifle range rented out, to my surprise. This was apparently blatant misinformation.

A review of the newsletter schedule finds the rifle and multipurpose ranges frequently rented out on weekends (you know, when normal people who work during the week get a chance to go shooting). I pay the same annual fee as everyone else, and I don't think I'm being unreasonable when I want to use the facilities for which I am paying.

Hopefully the Malahat range can run on the memberships of IPSC and skeet shooters and hunters alone, because those of us who do not have time to join the club executives may just leave and take our membership fees with us.

Making range access and use a hassle for younger casual shooters like myself, Tango2 and the first time shooter we had with us is not the way to protect the future of the shooting sports.

Being on a club executive (not this clubs) I can see renting the range out for a fee to generate money for range improvements, taxes, insurance and keep club fee's down is a good idea. We would be very carefull as to when to rent out the range and for how long so as to not inconvinience club members.

We have a rule at our club, when we rent out the range, that if any member shows up, then group renting must stop, and wait until the club member is finished. then they can start up again.

I haven't had many problems at the Malahat personally, during Gunnutz casual shoots or with guests. Most planned events are over by early afternoon on the rifle range and as far as the multi-purpose range, yes the IPSC folk do give off a vibe of "ownership", but it would be very unusual for every shooting bay to be in use when it's just their practice day.

As Pullen's Gunsmithing is now selling Vic Fish and Game memberships (given that JDF is likely to remain in limbo for some time) I imagine the Malahat will be getting busier. On Sunday, the caretaker busted a couple of JDF members who claimed that they were "told in a letter from John Pullen" that they could shoot at Malahat for free. Of course, the letter said no such thing - John only suggested Vic F&G as the local alternative.

So where are people going to shoot toilets, computers and TV sets now? :)
