No more Savage 99s

I have a 99 that the s # = 1951 Built in /51 and it's a 243win. only about 4 years before the 243 came out. shoots fine so being rebarreled only matters to a collector. Has a steel mag. instead of brass.

Top one was Grandma's 1965 99c in .308.
The bottom one was my great grandfather's 1908 1899B in .303 Savage.

I find when I go hunting I still grab one of my 99's more often than not. They aren't the most accurate rifles in the gun room but I find them one of the handiest and know they will always go bang.

Savage 99

I have two Savage 99s one 99F in 358 with an engraved receiver, and the other one is in 303 Savage.
I also have a Savage 24 222/20 Gage.
I never shot the 358 but I understand it is quite a round. Information from Cartredges of the World indicates more hitting power than a 35 Remington, and not that far behind a 35 Whelen.

... Has a steel mag. instead of brass.

Until I read this, I had never noticed that my '52 .300 has a steel rotor.
Its in great condition - put hang tags on it, and it could almost pass for new.
My other 99 is a Montreal Home Guard .303. Unfortunately bubba just had to cut the forend.
Savage is looking at reintroducing the 99.

You guys who are having a hard time finding nice Savages should live in N.B.
There seem to be quite a few around for $350-$500 a pop and very few beaters in the lot.

Lots in NS too ! A friend of mine from there sold me 2 savage 99's one in .303 savage and one .300 savage ...... mint shape 200$ each , and he has at least 5 more to sell . I should buy them all and sell them here on the EE and fund my next toy

When at a local gun store I always check the used rifle rack for 99's in .308.
So far nothing...they seem to be quite hard to find in our area. :(

I stupidly passed up on a nice 99 in 300 savage a few years ago.
The new owner let me shoot it a few months later.

I heard a rumor on some other forum that Savage may be bringing back the 99?

I've only got one, a 250-3000 Takedown I bought off a buddy.
I went on some website where you enter the serial # and up pops the date of manufacture. Mine is apparently made in 1921.

I'm mostly a bolt rifle guy but the 99's are a slick little lever gun.

bring back the 99

I'm no expert, but I did see an add for a "Aniversary Edtion" 99 with a lever last year, cost was over 1500.00, guys at the gun shop say they will not make anymore because of the expense of the rotary mag to manufacture. The cost to make the rotary mag makes the gun very expensive, not what the savage gun was originally created for. It was meant to be a common man's rifle.

I actually have a picture of my Grandfather and his buddy standing side by side in front of an early model T ( I believe) with wooden spokes on the tire rims and 2 deer laying across the hood. Not sure what his buddy is holding but my Grandfather is holding a savage 99 the only reason I know this is because there is no hammer on his gun and there is a lever action, were talking 19 teens to early 20's.
If anyone is interested I'll post the pic with a link sometime. Very cool nostalgic pic.

Cool pic! Any chance that you still have his rifle? :)

Also notice the lack of scopes. :D

NO Chance of that, he died before I even had a memory of him, Seems that no one knows the whereabouts of that rifle.

What a shame.

It would be neat if the CFC could do a trace for you and send a letter to the owner on your behalf.
That is if the rifle is still in one piece.

One day I'll find a decent little 99 in 303. More than a few family members used one for putting meat on the table. Just a nice little carbine and then a 1899C in 38-55. Wishful thinking....

My Uncle Dennis when he was 17 or so.
