No steel targets allowed at Mission Rod & Gun now

I am also a member ( just renewed after many years away) I am with you on this,it would be a nice change from putting holes in paper once and a while.

Especially at longer ranges. It's nice to hear that "clang" out at 25 or 50m; certainly easier than peering through binocs or a spotting scope, except for the precision shooting guys.

Maybe I've started something here, so we'll see what John G's response to my e-mail is. Putting a note up on the pistol range asking for feedback is probably the best way. Once the weather improves (June...) they might begin to get some responses.

This was the reason for posting here on CGN as I know there are a bunch of local shooters who are Mission range members.

Maybe I'll put my scuba gear and wellies on next week when I go to renew, and enjoy the last few days of enjoying shooting my own steel. :)

Right now we allow member owned steel to be used at Abby, but I know we are also getting a new insurer this coming year, I will review their policy and report when I get back from Europe.

Pleeeease!

I'm buying some MGM Targets and if I can't use them at Mission, I really, reaaallly hope to be able to use them at Abbotsford...!

I'm on a range board of a new range/old range. We're just going through getting certified. Building burms etc.... When the local CFO came out, basically, no steel period was the word I got. Because of insurance costs it's becoming prohibitive. As someone who had a 10mm come back off a steel target into the hand. Even though it was a shallow graze I understand the thinking, and I love shooting steel. But if the range can't control the steel, it's a serious safety hazard that can shut a range down.

It seems like we now live in a world where people can't accept others decisions. This is one you can work to try to change through the system, but I think you'll find once you're responsible, you'll make the same decision.

Our club has just started selling steel targets to members. They have provided hangers in the bunkers and the targets come with the mating attachment. You just walk up and drop it onto the fitting. A 12" AR 500 1/2 inch target is like 70 bucks. It wasn't for insurance reasons, the club just got tired of replacing the steel after someone shot up both the 50 yd. ones with a 50 bmg

Just to clarify something about Mission. The cowboys and Speed Steel have their targets because the cowboys and Speed Steel groups went and got the steel and had the targets made up. I believe they got the money for this from the club but then did the work themselves.

And the money that is collected from entry fees for these events goes back into the club coffers for the most part. So the steel was paid for a long time ago.

It was the two groups that banded together that got things done. Proof that volunteering for stuff like this works.

That cowboy town up there? All built and mostly paid for BY THE MEMBERS OF THE COWBOY GROUP! The rest of the materials came from donations and scrounging.

And yes, I'm one of the Red Mountain Renegades that did the work. I wasn't there when the original town was built but I've had a hand in maintaining and improving the structures.

Folks, this stuff doesn't happen on its own. It takes doing some research before hand, making informed motions at meetings and then following through with the sweat of one's brow to make stuff like this happen.

.... that and finding some way to make the 5.56 AR clones auto-deactivate when pointed at the handgun steel...... :D
