This is ridiculous. LOTS of parts will cause the rifle to cease to function until replacement.

Here's an incomplete list:

1) Bolt body failure.
2) Firing pin.
3) Hammer.
4) Plugged, blown or dramatically bent barrel.
5) Buttstock.
6) Extractor (after the first shot).
7) Receiver failure.
8) follower rod.
9) Recoil spring.

Any part removed or broken will cause the rifle to stop working. However, a broken or damaged extractor will leave the empty case in the chamber. Using a cleaning rod to remove said case and loading singly will still allow the rifle to fire. A broken or damaged firing pin will stop the rifle firing until it's replaced. Same as any other rifle.
"...would still function without an op rod..." Nope. The op rod is what opens the action under gas pressure. Without it, you wouldn't have an op handle either.

+1

Bad question, or bad wording...

Now on a G43, also loosely known as "Hitler's Garand's", the spare parts included with the rifle were the firing pin, extractor (although a pin and spring are also needed), and firing pin extension.

I agree, any part can fail & cause the rifle to stop working.

Gentlemen,
Extractor Plus Spring and Plunger. It would cause the bolt and all of it parts to fall apart. Ejector plus spring and plunger. VERY hard to FIND in the grass or stone. I just carry a spart bolt. But then again I cheat. VERY OLD TRICK. Take the wife's RED nail polish and paint it on the springs and plungers. Looks goofy but helps when hunting them at the range or on the rug in the house.
Thanks again Sir
Clancy

When I was building a M1 that had come from the Phillipines,
No wood except rear handguard
No rear sight
Bore like 10 miles of gravel road, but it was only $40. Thankfuly we had a rifle team on base and the armourer fitted a new barrel and supplied the rest of the missing bits. Made in Feb 1942.
I had the bolt magnafluxed and we found the bolt lug had a hairline crack.
As for the rest of the bits, I have never had a problem.

The first op rods were known to sometimes break because the dogleg was cut at a 90 degree angle. That was cured by radiusing that section.
Spares?
Op rod spring
Extractorand associated bits

I have NEVER heard of the follower arm breaking. The clip latch sometimes goes bad but it's a rare occurence. Hardly worth buying a spare.

They are pretty much fool proof, but they are not DAMM FOOL proof.;)
