Way back in the late 80's I recieved my first centerfire rifle as payment for some yardwork. It was a rusted, sporterized, 1915 No1MkIII that I promptly traded (with a little cash) for a 1918 in slightly better condition. Over the next couple of years I abused that rifle badly. I can't remember ever cleaning it, I tore it down using the wrong tools mangling several screws, bolts, and loosing the safety along the way. I attempted to install a new stock and mananged to screw that up without too many woodworking skills at the time. The front and rear sights were dissasembled and parts lost, and the rr buttstock was chopped off and the buttplate lost.
I lost interest in the rifle in the early 90's and untill this weekend, it sat up in the rafters of my parents garage without any oil or protection. Now I have it back and I'm planning on rebuilding it (sporter not restoration). I have collected a few spare parts, rear sight spring, new safety assembly, and I have a sporter stock on the way so it can be used while I attempt to fix the replacement stock that I buggered up. The bore is ok. The rifling is half decent although pitted a tiny bit.
The Rifle as it has sat for over 20 years
improperly fitted stock that has to be repaired
missing safety and buggered screw (looking for a replacement if there is one out there)
missing sight spring and screw (still need a replacement screw)
another damaged screw not sure if it needs to be replaced or not
complete teardown for cleaning and inspection
makers mark. Anybody know which armoury this came out of?
reciever and barrel marks
The plan is to clean off all the old dirt, oil, rust, and other crud and then reblue. I will be mounting an ati scope mount to it. Current stock will be finished and refitted but in the mean time an old sporter stock will do the job. If the original screws can be restored then I will use them otherwise they will need to be replaced. More pics will follow as the job progresses. If anybody has a line on parts that I need, drop me a line.
