I have a no4 mk1*, it is now a deluxe grade sporter by Churchill arms. It is stamped M1944, BQ serial10842 Which I take to be a Maltby. what seems odd to me is that the bolt removal is the plunger type a la mk1. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

So, the "guide rail" for the bolt head does have the cut at the front, that allows pivoting the bolt head upward for removal of the bolt, as well as the plunger type release at the back?

Google could be your friend on this.

I am no expert, but looks like there where some mislabeled units.

That forum explained it. apparently there was quite a number of Maltby made no4s mis marked with * all seem to be 1944 production. Thanks for the help.
