Hey CGN folks

Ended trading an old scope of mine for a this No4 Mk1 from a friend that looks like it needs some TLC and then maybe some more to bring back to a nice working condition.

I was just wondering if the condition of the bore ( or perhaps other parts) would even make this a safe shooter as is? Bore has some serious pitting, fair bit of rust/patina on metal parts and who knows what lays beneath the wood as my friend received it from a client of his who let it sit neglected for many years sadly...

Perhaps you fine gentleman can lend advice and tell me a little more of the rifle and markings. I can faintly make out an FTR above the No4 Mk1. Faint proof markings near the front of the receiver. Barrel does not move freely in any direction while holding gun steady. Gun has not being headspaced or checked over by anybody.

It's my first Enfield and would like to get it back to shootable condition but just need to make sure the juice is worth the squeeze and that I can actually squeeze it. Ha.

Thanks

If you have a friend who works in an engine shop, ask them if you can soak the metal parts in there parts cleaning tank. It will clean the barrel and you will see its true condition

I think you did well on the trade. Scrub the bore with a good copper brush. Pitting of the bore is not unsafe. I have shot way worse. It's a Maltby.

I think it looks pretty good on the extertior actually, it’s painted black. Maybe suncorite, someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to verify that. Nice that it’s still in full wood, hopefully a thorough cleaning will improve things cosmetically on the outside. Give the bore a good scrub with some solvent and a brass brush a few times, you might be surprised a how well the bore cleans up. I’d have no problems shooting it, my sporter no.4 I deer hunt with was filthy inside and out and it cleaned up great. If I do my part it shoots 1”-1 1/4” 5 shot groups at 100yrds with commercial so ammo.

Thanks for the reply gents. My friend said he cleaned the bore quite well himself but some peoples definition of clean varries. I will give it that deep cleaning that it deserves and see how it is under all those years of neglect.

Get some Wipe Out foaming bore cleaner, and let it soak in the barrel overnight. (Don’t get any on the wood). That stuff is the best for removing grime and copper buildup.
