I was just wondering what the history of the Savage built LE. Is it less desirable than a Brit or Canadian made rifle?

Savage

Most consider Savage a close second to our Long Branchs, followed by British made. Nothing wrong with a clean Brit, but they are getting hard to find and most got FTR'd in India.(as did Savages and LB's). Have to remember Savage had the highest No.4 production. Many can be found in excellent or even un-issued condition that never went overseas. All Savage were finished in Dulite, sort of a parking same as 1911A1. Nice rifles that every Enfield buff should have. Our U.S. brothers regard them very highly of course.

If you are in the states the Savage is more desirable. In Canada it is just another No4.
The Americans began manufacturing the No4 on the "Lend Lease" scheme, basically to assist the allies prior to actually getting off there asses and fighting the Nazi's.
 
I have several. On average they are good rifles, better then most of the British made rifles and they did send parts with the LongBranch factory.

I would say that they are just as good as a similary dated LongBranch but not better.

If you find a nice one buy it.
 
generally on par with the LB guns as stated hear. better than the brit ones usually. i am lucky enough to have one in the grease unfired in its original shipping box.

Oddly enough, we are awash in Savage made No. 4's down here in the US (almost all FTR's). Long Branch made rifles are selling at a premium relative to Savages.

Go figure .... :D

Is the fact that a rifle is FTR'ed stamped on the rifle?

Getting off our asses and fighting the nazi's? We were depth charging U boats long before December 7th and protecting British and Canadian Convoys part of the way across the pond.
After Dec 7th, the bulk of our war effort was fighting nazi's, while the Pacific theatre got second best.
The bohemian gefrieter didn't declare war on us before that.

We just like to give you guys a good ribbin' about taking such an uncharacteristically long time to declare war on foreign countries. ;)

Hi

Fortunately in this case the minor technicality of not having actually bothered to declare war didn't get in the way of romping and stomping in the North Atlantic.
