The magazine release on my rifle is very stiff. Is there any way to decrease the force required to release the mag? Thanks!!

These rifles magazines weren't meant to be removed, they were meant to be topped up in the rifle.

But: there's nothing beyond making sure the catch is free of grease varnish and dirt you can do. Dont try to fix anything please.

They are meant to be topped up with chargers, I agree. However mine is wearing a scope so chargers are a no go.

I understand the catch is connected to the sear spring. I understand you do not alter a sear spring without knowing what you're doing. I am still interested to know if there is a work around.

Then you top it off like a blind or floorplate magazine. The magazines are also not really designed to retain rounds outside the rifle.

Mine is also VERY stiff, but as others have stated it is not meant to be removed and I didn't want to damage anything trying to "fix" it so I left it be.

They certainly are designed to be easily removed but not, obviously, for rapid reloading with multiple magazines. I usually drop the mag if I have to stop shooting for some reason and find it convenient to load the mag out of the gun prior to shooting. I've had some that didn't fit terribly well but could be improved with a bit of work on the lug on the magazine body.

Mine is stiff, but I don't mind removing it, it's NOT that bad. Thinking a little file work on the mag might help.

Sorry my wording was confusing. I can and remove mine for cleaning clearing the rifle during firing stops and such. What I meant is that it doesn’t bother me that it is stiff as I don’t remove the mag enough for it to matter, so I didn’t bother messing around with the mag release at risk of damaging something else.

Is the mag release lever stiff when you press it to remove the mag or is the mag itself tight when you slide it in or out of the magwell?

Iirc the release levers tend to be stiff, if the mag is tight you can fit it to your particular rifle by filing the lug on the back of the mag. You should be able to see where it’s rubbing as the bluing will be worn, my no.4 is like this I’m going to file it a bit to make it quicker to insert and release for hunting.

Magazines were only to be removed for two reasons; unloading under adverse conditions (darkness, mud, etc.) or for maintenance.

The release being stiff is normal. And a well fitting magazine is normal as well, you want a tight fit so that the magazine is retained in place. Having said that, when you carefully reinsert a Lee-Enfield magazine, you must also ensure that the magazine has fully seated. A bit of a tug on the front of the magazine will tell you whether she's there to stay, or just hung up.

As for loading with a scope (or some other impediment), you can still load the magazine one round at a time "blind", or just use the follower as a loading guide - one round at a time.

Hello Slowbalt. First I would take off the fore end. Make sure that the sear spring lips are in the proper position in the sear
and magazine catch. Sometimes these can slip out of position if a lip is broken. If everything is good there remove the spring
and make sure the mag catch is not obstructed at the top where dirt can accumulate and limit movement. If all is in good order
to this point than stroll to your local armourer for a weak spring. JOHN

Bit of both, will need to investigate.
