Don`t judge me but, as much as I love my 303`s this beast was just too hard on my old shoulder, and it was knackered when I got it years ago for $150.
Started life in Aug 1944 at Fazakerly(no ftr), the receiver was D&T`d for a scope, the rocket nozzle had a million little holes drilled into the top in front of the sight, maybe in an attempt to reduce muzzle flip, and the rear sight was missing.
The most I could ever stand shooting was 5 in a row, the thing`s a jack hammer on the shoulder.
I decided to tame the best, as a collectable it wasn`t, so no harm no foul, and I now have, to me, a cool sporting rifle that`s an absolute pleasure to shoot and still handy in the bush.
The break down, use stuff I had laying around, first remove the rocket nozzle and replace with a proven muzzle device, M1A(m14).
Install a rear sight, used a BSA made sniper conversion Mk1 singer sight.
Next tame the recoil with a hydraulic dampening recoil butt plate.
Lastly for shyts and giggles, a new home for my L42 scope mount topped off with a vintage Weaver with post and cross hair reticle(German #1). This was the hardest part as the meat required at the rear of the receiver is not there due to the lightening milling done to the No5 receiver. Stuff had to be put back in to accommodate the scope mount.
I can now fire full on military spec 174 ball ammo(mk7) all day long without wincing or pain. Plus it was a fun project and I never pas on a problem that needs solving. How ever, had I not had the bits laying about I`d have been out of pocket nearly a grand just on start up.
Cheers

Fired 60 rounds that day at the range, including zeroing.....:d

If the No. 5 beats you up, don't buy an LEC 1. As for the rifle, I kind of like it, it saves an otherwise beat up and bubba'd No5 and turns it into something unique and usable. Very tasteful too.

Yes I know all about the LEC`s, shot 1 round out of my buddies and said ouch and then handed it back. Cool guns though, wouldn`t have one if I can`t enjoy shooting it. These carbines where made for young meaty shoulders.

I put a box of Mk VII ball through mine - 48 rounds of real deal combat ammo, and it did leave a mark. Strangely, it bothered me less than an EAL which is heavier and has a recoil pad, I think it has to do with the stock design, but like I said, it did leave a bruise.
