Just got a no5 mk1 Jungle Carbine I have done all th checking for authentic and it has passed it is for sure a Jungle Carbine, my only question is the stock and top hand guard. The hand guard was not present when I got the gun, my nana has been hiding it for 30 years and just decided today to give it to me, it was first gun my grandfather bought when he moved to Canada after the war, it was what he was issued in last year of war, he was comfortable using it so that's the back story I have.

I have cleaned it pretty well it looks in pretty good condition as far as guns go, clean, all parts seem in great condition, my only question is can you use it without the top guard, as well there don't appear to be any mark in the stock where the ring that holds the sling would sit in the stock and there is no cap on stocks end?

I understand some may have not had the stock cap?

Potential answe is he may have taken the stock off and made his own or dropped in an mk4 stock? Not really sure

Anyways any questions or answers would be great, hoping to take out for a whirl soon, and for sure s bear in the spring

Its a floating barrel, so I don't see why you couldn't. I've seen other carbines put in different stocks, but..............I'm sure a wiser person will chime in soon.

This No5 has been sporterized unfortunately. They sanded out the groove for the barrel band. You can see where the groove used to be. It's next to impossible to find No5 forestocks and handguards. Many guys use No4 forestocks and handguards to make them fit the No5. It will require reshaping the forestock and handguard of course. The other problem is finding the correct barrel band. Again you can use a No4 band. The end result will look pretty good but will never be a proper milsurp collectible. If the flash suppressor/bayonet lug is still there, I would do the restore if I were you. If you decide to go ahead, I'm sure there are lots of members here that can give you the proper dimensions to do this project.

If it was your grandfathers gun, why not leave it the way it is as maybe he did the sportification. Instead of spending the money on trying to fix something that will likely look close to right but never be right, look for a decent collectable example. I've seen a couple in the last few shows I've gone to for around the 500 mark.

Yep you can see where i am pretty sure he sanded it down. he used for deer hunting and for what ever reason he decided to not have the top guard and strap. Works for me

Ill keep this way i think. Indont imagine having the top missing will affect the shooting much

You say your Grand Dad was issued a No5 in the last year of the war. Was he a Para in the 1st Airborne by any chance??? The Red Devils!
