true story..
I was in a hunting store in Alberta that I often frequent..
They had just hired a new store manager from Ontario..
I had been around the block, was well known in the store (still am even though there are new owneres now) but not known by this new manager.
I walked in the store and was mentioning to someone else shopping about my poor luck that morning stalking an elk that morning...
Well over comes the new manager...
" He most likely scented you and that's why you couldn't get close"
I told him I didn't think so, I was a good ways down wind, but the animal just seemed convinced on keeping on the move... I did snap a branch a few times, maybe he heard that and was unsettled...
" nope, he definitely scented you,,, let me show you what you need"
Well holy sweet mother of...
I had clothes detergent, deoderant, gum, hair and body wash, charcoal carbon something or others and what looked like baby wipes...
He said.. wash your clothes in the detergent, shower with the body wash, and use the deoderant (at this point I believe he is talking sense)
Then,,,,
Chew this gum so your breath doesn't smell,... and every 15 minutes wipe your brow, neck sides and groin with these wipes !!!!!
I asked him was he serious, and he was...
Anyhow,..long story short...
I don't wear cologne or sented body wash soaps deoderants etc on hunting days..my clothes, I wash them in a mild detergent once, and then two or three times no dtergent and try my best to wash the clothes as infrequently as possible..
I own a dog, ... he rides in my truck lots... if you do all the scent control in the world and then sit in the truck,...it was all done in vain...
I try to minimize my scent, but depend much more on reading the breeze, (which I believe is 100 times better)
Scentless boots, etc etc. that's great if you don't want ypur scent on the ground,..but in the air? It is damn hard to control the air that pushes up the top of your boot with every step you take... sure you can wear scnt control socks etc etc etc, and yes this may help,...but using the breeze to your advantage, I swear has been far more useful for me.
Unless you hunt in a vaccum, or seall all air escapes, the best you can hope for is reducing scent, elimination isn't going to happen.
We took a peanutbutter cracker and put in a scent control jacket and wrapeed the jacket over and hid it in the cattails,... 2 hours later when we returned and I let the dog out,.. he was running around, and bang, as soon as he ran down wind he smelled it and was on the jacket...
Maybe it was our stink on the jacket he smaelled who knows, an it was by no means scientific, but I have not much faith in these products that claim to eliminate scent... i guess there ain't as much money to made on teaching people what up and down wind is
