I just got a new to me 30-30 and need a site for it (my eyes are getting old I guess). I was going to go with a peep site but was wondering if there may be a non military looking dot sight that may work.
The Leupold Prismatic 1x looks more like a short standard hunting scope than a red dot.
Available as a Prismatic Hunting or Prismatic Tactical.
Plus it has a fixed reticle like a standard scope, with optional removable red led reticle lighting.
I have a Prismatic Tactical on my XCR-L and prefer it hands-down over the Aimpoint PRO or EOTech XPS (that are both now sitting in their boxes on the shelf).
I put a Bushnell First Strike red dot on my daughters .50 cal muzzle loader and it works great out to 100 yards. I also have a new-to-me 30-30 and was thinking of putting one on it as well.
It is the basic barrel mounted sliding style. There would be drilling for whatever I do. Because it is not AE I worry about mounting on the receiver and really don't want a tang mounted peep. Red dots (and I suppose scout style) sights have good eye relief so could be mounted in front of the action. I am really liking the look of the leapolds but the are pricey.
What rifle do you have? Most Marlins and Winchesters are drilled for side mounted receiver peeps ( two small screws).
If you get a rail mounted on the barrel the Bushnell Trs-25 is a good inexpensive red dot.
