and yet how do you explain the norestricteds out there with barrels under 18 inches and oal under 26 inches ?

just because a manufacturer makes something , doesn't mean it is all sunshine and rainbows with the rcmp ......

again the sizes given in the law are minimum sizes that a pre existing firearm can be cut down to .
 
It's not restricted because it's a pump action. The mare's leg is not restricted because it's a lever action.

If it was semi auto, then it would be restricted. That's about it.
 
Thanks Gatvolboerseun for a great thread. This is the most informative, most well researched and documented thread on this subject that I have seen here on CGN.

Update: I just ordered one of these from Bullseye. I was skeptical at first, having had bad experiences with some other Chinese and Turkish shotguns, but the reviews on this look promising and although I would prefer a factory Remington 870 in this configuration (or even shorter w/ 12" barrel) this looks like the best short NR choice available at the moment.

The ATA Etro is made in Turkey, based on the 870 design, although I am not sure there are any compatible parts.
Bulls Eye shows only 2 left in stock, I found a few other Canadian dealers, but they were all out of stock.

Update: It appears that the ATA Etro is the same (or very similar to) the Weatherby PA-08. ATA makes the PA-08 for Weatherby. There are numerous good reviews on line of the Weatherby.

If a gun in the same config as ones they modify came straight from Remington...it would be NR.

Nope! youre wrong on that !

I've got one in the same configuration straight from Remington and it's classed as a restricted shotgun (factory pistol grip and short barrel), i've got another one from another manufacturer (still in the same configuration ) and it's still restricted.

And "manufacturer or THE manufacturer" doesn't make any difference to the RCMP FRT lab.

Try a better explanation please !

Maybe it's so short they consider it a handgun?
I should have said 'could' be non restricted instead of 'would'.
That's justhow they allow it to be NR while under minimum OAL. Doesn't necessarily mean they all will be. Just means that's the only way they can end up NR.

My bet is the frt number was for the short barreled full stock version

the law states, it is restricted if...........

a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise

As soon as a pistol grip goes on this gun , its restricted

It has a bolt release.

I now have about 100 rds through it, including some slugs, all 2 3/4 size. Reliable like the sunrise so-far. Very smooth action.

Nice and short, the perfect gun to take with on my horse.
