Okay before you tell me to use the search function I did and I'm not satisfied with what I found. There are dozens of threads but none with the info I'm looking for.

I am looking for a black rifle, most likely the ar 180b. It needs to be non restricted because I tend to bore with just shooting paper all the time. I usually go out to farmer's fields in the summer and blast away at gopher's and coyotes. I already have a sks and while I like it for general plinking it does me no good at more than 100yards for gopher sized targets.

I'm sure armed sask will be all over this thread like oprah on a ham and since he seems to be the unofficial authority on AR 180's so I'll direct this towards him. What are the strengths of this firearm? Besides price.

How accurate can I expect this thing to be with no more mods than a good scope and some hot rounds?

What other mods are worth doing to this gun?

What should I avoid?

What are the general downsides?

To all others out there what alternative to the ar180b would you recomend. Price is not that much of an issue as I expect to keep this for quite some time and am willing to pay more for a quality unit.

Don't forget the SIG (choose your color), or the M-96, XCR, or even the CZ-858-2 (although that one probly doesn't fit your accuracy requirements), or even the M-305 (not black though).
 
I've got the m-305, love it but not what I'm looking for right now. I want to stick to .223 ammo. The m96 has some nice traits but I see a lot of mixed reviews. The XCR doesn't look like it's available yet. Correct me if I'm wrong. Not interested in the ak lookalike cz 858 2. I just don't see the point of owning that when my sks fires the same rounds. As for the sig, forgive a noob but which sig are you talking about? And where might I find good quality pics and specs on this with prices?
 
SIG/Swiss Arms PE-90 is non-restricted. They're available in Canada and sold under the model designations, Classic Green, Black Special, Blue Star, Heavy Metal and something Red...basically refers to the color of the rifle. The Classic Green is more of a greenish grey, Black Special is a military type black, Blue Star is bright blue, the Heavy Metal is sorta like a funky gunmetal and there is also a bright red one that I forget the exact name of. Someone want to jump in here?

Fantastic rifles, simply the best semi-auto, military "style" rifle on the market today. Fit, finish and overall quality is outstanding! Good accuracy and extremely high look cool factor...although I'm not a fan of the bright blue & red models!

They make for a great plinker, gopher gun, coyote rifle, etc... as they're non-restricted! Only drawback is the price! You're looking at $2,999.00 plus tax...but they're worth every penny!
 
A+ on the AR-180B. I haven't had a problem with mine and she more that accurate enough for Coyotes.

Well, it's cheap but you already knew that. The biggest strength of the 180B are weight, in its stock for them 180B is very light, excelent for pack rifle. Also a bonus is common parts with the AR15 (mags, bolt, trigger mech). Of course the biggest one: gas piston operation, no more ####ting where you eat. The bolt carrier design also means it will rarely jam from being dirty.

I'm not really the guy to answer this as my 180B is far from stock and I never really had a good scope until I did my rail mod. From what I recall, with iron sights and me sucking at shooting, I was getting 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards with Winchester 55gr white box. Be advised this was way back in the day and the 180B was one of my first center fire rifles. Since then I've learned a lot. With the free float barrel and Eotech I can do 2 inch groups at 100 with 55gr Eagle. I could do better with match ammo and if I didn't suck at shooting.

What other mods are worth doing to this gun?

First off, you must make it reliable! My 180B had issues with feeding certain mags but after a 2 cent fix I have NEVER had a FTF or FTE. They may have since fixed the issue, you'll find out when you get yours. Check my website for more info.

The other big mod is the optics. DO NOT use the factory scope mount, it's pure ####. Get yourself a Storm Werkz QD rail. I do have issues with the mounting plate on the top of the reciever. With earlier models the welds were known to be loose. In my opinion every 180B owner should remove the mounting plate and drill and tap the receiver for a picatinny rail.

Used to be lack of after market parts but that has been, for the most part, remedied over the past year. The biggest issue now, that has not been fixed as of yet with an aftermarket part, are the handguards. Mine didn't fit well. However, there is a company in the states making a drop in RIS for the 180B, so that should be fixed soon.

Other downsides: Non-chrome barrel, no dust cover (not really needed), lack of boobies.

To all others out there what alternative to the ar180b would you recomend.

If you can afford it, get yourself a Swiss Arms PE90 (Black Special). No contest between anything else. If I had the money I'd toss my 180B in the trash in a heart beat.
 
Color is the only difference between all of them.

Some one mentioned the Heavy Metal was a grey type color. If I remember correctly the Heavy Metal is not really any color, it's the rifle straight out of assembly with no finish, just a clear coat to prevent rust. You can see all the welds, heat discoloration, etc. I've never seen one, this is just what I recall being told.

This is really got me thinking about maybe saving another year and getting the SIG. Is there anyone out there with a bad experience with the PE90? Besides the cost what reason do I have to avoid this rifle? I have read in other forums that they tend to rust easy, especially in the gas tube area. I'm kind of neurotic about keeping my guns clean and rust free. There seems to be a lack of information out there from actual owners. Is the price that much of a deterrent for everyone.

Anyone want to buy a kidney? One owner. Low miles.

Yep. Just checked the previouslt mentioned link. No finish, just a protective coating.
