OK Ive been lurking in this thread trying to get some ideas on a NON-RESTRICTED 5.56 Politically correct Black Rifle. My AR15s are great and all, but they are restricted and are range rifles only. I have ample AR15 mags and would want a non-restricted rifle that could use them as well. In addition to that Id want a folder so that the rifle would pack better overall.

These are some options and I was wondering if anyone has comments on the following:

AR180B (Id expect to add the Stormworkz folder / ACE stock and quad rail) There are alot of references to that set-up on this board (Thanks ARMEDSASK!)

Cost would be $1200 plus modifications (rail/FH and stock)
advantages would be AR15 mags

HK SL8 I was looking at the Top Notch G36 kit for $400USD in addition to cost of the rifle that would allow for AR15 mags as well. Overall more costly but may be worth it in regards to overall quality. Im not sure if Id have the heart to add a flashider to that barrell :(

Robinson Arms M96 ... just slightly out of the price range

Robinson XCR Havent heard any actual user feedback.

I know that the Sig 550 series are well regarded, but they 1. dont take AR15 mags and are $$$.

I agree. I have a line on a used SL8 in the $1000 range. Even without the folding stock the AR15 mag adapter is available for $175 from Wolverine.

G36 Kit is nice but expensive

I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I was pretty sure that it'd cost upwards of $5K to turn a SL8 into an imitation G36 (including buying an SL8). That's definitely alot more than a new M96.

I've heard the SL8 with G36 kit is dodgey at best. Not worth the money if you ask me.

The M96 is a great rifle. I'm still waiting on the XCR's.

On the first part, you heard incorrectly. Mine works fine, as do most. Biggest issue is a 1" increase in LOP. A guy with long arms would find that a good thing, others not so good. Solution is a G36C stock.

The second part is a matter of preference; I tend to agree, but others may think it's worthwhile.

Shazam, search around for one of my sl8 / g36 conversion threads. If all you want is the pistol grip, it's not too expensive, just takes time for the paperwork. PM me for contact info of the US guy who will do exports. Things add up when you include the optics, forend, etc.

You really only need the pistol grip if you're doing action shooting with it. The thumbhole stock is fine for varminting or target shooting / plinking (for most people - try before you buy).

Make sure the SL8 you have a line on is an SL8-4 or -5. You won't like having a -1, it was designed for the US market and requires drastic alterations to accept AR mags (plus the -1's are grey-white).

In a previous thread, my impression from owners of the AR180B is that it is a good rifle but quality wise is no match for an AR15.

Is this true?

I'm looking at a PC black rifle as well and am leaning towards the AR-180B.

Thanks for the info guys. I consider the AR15 as the benchmark. Ive seen all of the files withthe cracking Armalite polymer frames etc. and the mags are a real consideration. I rally cant spend anymore $$$ on new mags as the AR15 mags that I have now will fit and function well with 5 rounds in any "PC rifle".

I had to explain to someone that "bad" rifles such as the Daewoo K1A1, and Armalite 180 (AKs & HK9X etc) are PROHIBITED (They shoot a 5.56 round from a military M16 type magazine), while the AR15 types are RESTRICTED (They shoot a 5.56 round from a military M16 type magazine), while the AR180B, XCR, M96, HK SL8, Ruger Mini 14 and others are NON-RESTRICTED (They shoot a 5.56 round from a military M16 type magazine) :(

same mag. same round. all rifle. very different rules. In Canada some are just more "PC" than others.

Im not trying to make sense of the rules, Like so many other law abiding Canadians I thought (foolishly) that I could keep and shoot the 12(5) rifles (FNs, AK, etc). The end of SAPs have convinced me that I want NON-RESTICTED. sorry for the rant :)

Good point, the infamous mini 14. I was ranting there  better now, point was that they are identical in function (Chev vs BMW), but they are ultimately the same tool.

In any case, that Ive worked out my M14 bug (Projects done) ... Ill be looking to build a Non Restricted 5.56 rifle soon. ;)

If the AR15 is the Caddy of firearms then the AR180B would probably be a Chev Cavalier. Not junk but a cheaper (price wise, not quality) construction, not as fancy, and a decent rifle.

Then again, the AR180B has the superior operating system. You put a metal lower on a 180B and I would take it over the AR15 every second for the rest of my life.

Here we agree. If you want to spend a fair bit of time cleaning and replacing heat-stressed parts, the AR will give you that. Any of the op-rod alternatives (SL8, AR180B,...) run really clean and cool in the receiver.

Whats the going price for a sl8?

They are $2150 new at Wolverine, just for the rifle with one mag (or is it two mags?). Used, they seem to go for around the $1750 mark most of the time.

I am not a big fan of the 180B, mainly for aesthetic reasons. It looks and feels cheap in my opinion. But, then it is half the cost of the others, and it can be made to look very nice with some mods and add-ons.

ROTFLMAO...couldn't let that one pass. Thats too funny. :D
If the AR15 is the caddy...

If the AR15 is the Caddy, then a PE90 would be a... Porsche?

The SL8 - how about a mid-range BMW

I like car comparisons (mostly because I like cars). Almost guaranteed to start arguments though...
