non-restricted and light weight black rifle options?

A .223 with the right bullet will cleanly kill deer all day long. SO if you are looking for a pre built "black" rifle, most of them come in .223 so you are good to go right there.

I built my MDI in 6.5 Grendel and would have no problem shooting a deer at 400 yards with it, so 6.5 Grendel is great if you want a bit more bullet weight, and if you want to assemble your own rifle from a receiver set like the ones that MDI or ATRS offer.

so if something like an AR can be made so light...what's holding up the new spread of NR rifles from being the 9lb average? :p
the average consumer of those rifles is more concerned with other aspects.

Same reason we don't see the new spread of NR rifles being offered in other calibers, the number of people who want it is small.

I don't think it's because the people who want is low...I think it's due to the cost of entry. if there were semi-auto rifles good for hunting in the $1000 range, they'd sell like hotcakes, but being most NR black rifles with caliber's that most would consider humane to use are twice that or more, it forces the products to be niche.

I see now that other than the SU-16, a lightweight black rifle capable of taking deer is out of my budget. I would love something in 6.5 Grendel or even .308, but they don't seem to exist or are far from affordable.

the deer I would take would be island deer on the Haida Gwaii, so within 100 yards most likely. I'd prefer to have a bit more than .223 though as word has it that the black bear has learned the sound of gunshots can mean a meal and the .223 is not suitable for taking bear humanely.

just a bump to see if there's anymore discussion to be had on this.

also, a number of the rifles listed are NR, but far from light :(
The cheapest and lightest you will get, that won’t cost you your left nut, will be an ATRS / MDI set chambered in 6.5 Grendel.
You’re looking at 8lbs ish with optics and loaded mag, providing you utilize a CFW or pencil barrel.
This would cost you Approximately $2000.
You could biy the new offering from MDI/BCL and do a barrel swap , bolt swap, and mag (6.5 Grendel) at a cost of $2100 ish.
Maybe recoup a couple hundred, selling the .223 barrel.

Are you allowed to shoot deer in your province with .223?

If so, just buy an $800 SU 16 , 1-7 twist, buy some 70 + grain ammo and your set.
That will kill a deer just as humainly as a 300 win mag, if you shoot it in the head, neck or heart.

Put a 2-7 leupold ,on it and 5 rnd mag , you’re at 6lbs and good for a 100 -200 kill... easily.

Or you could go with Wolverines.224 Valkyrie ($1500$) which is quite capable of what you need , but just as heavy and a different cat all together:)

Can confirm my MDI SLR is no skinny #####... but that's entirely my fault. Im sure the 18.6" barrel doesnt help.

Red Deer Shooting Center has had at least one non-pre order SLR shipment in the past couple of months, saw them advertising the shipment on an IG post a month or so ago. If you want a set it may be worthwhile calling them.

Great pics! 6.8 SPC Modern Sporter, are their rifle/parts consider mil spec? Can this rifle be setup to use 5.56mm? Please advise. Thx
