non-restricted and light weight black rifle options?

I don't think it's because the people who want is low...I think it's due to the cost of entry. if there were semi-auto rifles good for hunting in the $1000 range, they'd sell like hotcakes, but being most NR black rifles with caliber's that most would consider humane to use are twice that or more, it forces the products to be niche.

I see now that other than the SU-16, a lightweight black rifle capable of taking deer is out of my budget. I would love something in 6.5 Grendel or even .308, but they don't seem to exist or are far from affordable.

the deer I would take would be island deer on the Haida Gwaii, so within 100 yards most likely. I'd prefer to have a bit more than .223 though as word has it that the black bear has learned the sound of gunshots can mean a meal and the .223 is not suitable for taking bear humanely.

It's all relative, my sauer or styer bolt action rifles likely cost similar or more than the average black rifle I use/have built for hunting.

Sometimes it is not always about the cheapest way to skin the cat, even though this is how the majority rolls on this forum.

I mean the question was answered. A budget minded lightweight semi auto deer gun does exist.

Mentioned earlier: The CSA VZ 58 chambered in 7.62x39.

Short of an AR alternative or a polymer gun... its about as good as it gets.

Plenty accurate, durable and unfailing reliability in even adverse conditions.

I carried one around last season walking up and down hills for days, pushing bush. Downed a Whitetail buck with one boiler room shot @120m. Using Hornady SST rnds. Deer ran maybe 50m then died. The VZ was stellar the whole time. Highly pointable, rugged, its 5/30rnd aluminum mags work as an excellent monopod for off knee shots.... AND you feel like a badass while carry it around as well.

Very cool!

just put this 6.8 spc modern sporter together a few days ago. Haven't tried it yet (optic supposed to arrive in mail on monday) but if it shoots well my xcr-l in 6.8 will be sold. Nothing wrong with the xcr-l but i prefer an ar platform over it and the ms is as close as i'm going to get to that.

This ms doesn't feel too heavy to carry around but it could easily drop some weight with a different choice of furniture.
