Need some advice and input guys....I'm looking for a reliable (in VERY cold weather on a snowmobile), 308 cal., accurate....(hunting wolves at several hundred meters), robust (again cold weather and plastics make me nervous) battle rifle platform......

I'm thinking my options are a duded up norinco M-14, XCR-M or a Kel-Tec RFB....any others? any comments and or advice about the 3 I mentioned???

Well, how about an old classic? Browning BAR or somesuch? I don't have any experience with them myself. Not much help.
 
The M14 will fit the bill just fine for what you are looking for. Plastic should not make you nervous in the cold. Wood on the other hand should.
 
If you want an accurate large caliber rifle out to several hundred metres, I'd suggest a Browning Bar. It's accurate out of the box, and doesn't need any fussing around to mount a scope.

I've had mine out in -20 degrees C without any issues.

Whats wrong with wood in the cold? cracking? it sure feels less cold on the hands than plastic though.

I vote norc m14 in a boyds wood stock. Maybe some special grease for cold temps?

I have an XCR-L .223 that I use when calling coyotes, great gun, great cycling but a little on the heavy side and very expensive, unless you have a proper pack or holster for it I don't know that I would want to pack it around on a sled. With proper ammo you will be able to reach out there a bit farther. However, the Browning BAR is much cheaper, much lighter, and probably all around a much better rifle for what you will be using it for. There is also the Benelli MR 1, but in .223, however I have heard that your cheek doesn't rest on the stock and people find them a little uncomfortable to shoot, but I don't know, I don't own one and that is just hearsay. I myself was going to go with a BAR .243 but I was having trouble coming across one and just happened to score and XCR-L, otherwise I would be shooting a BAR.
 
If the stock thing is really holding you back on the M14, get a laminate stock from Boyds. Bulletproof. Heavy though, but if you are just packing it on a snowmobile or quad, it will never be an issue. You will still have less money into the entire gun than a BAR or some other wonder gun.
 
By the way, I think that a CZ858 would be even better for being tough, reliable and much lighter than a battle rifle. Shoot be good on coyotes out as far as you can shoot with open sights.
 
I have all 3 of the fore mentioned firearms...

My vote for an all around hunting rifle is the RFB, but you will need to get a kydex cheek rest as I've had my beard and mouth get stuck to the frozen metal stock when looking through the optic on occasion. (ouch)

Second would be the M14, as replacement parts are cheap and I have rarely had any issues with them going bang in any type of weather.

Last would be the XCR-M, although it is the most accurate of the three it's just too pretty and expensive to have it drop off the back of your ski-doo when your doing 50mph ... And it's too long to properly rack or backpack when riding (the RFB is perfect for this)

Just my opinion, for what it's worth...
