Non-restricted black rifles in calibers other than 223.

I received notification from Jason Wong of Hurricane Butterfly Research last year (March 2010) that the LWCR REPR was classified as non-Restricted. I'm on a blackberry so I can't look it up with the CFC, but was he incorrect for certain? Mind you, nobody will want to hunt with that beast--could you imagine trying to carry it for long periods over uneven terrain and through bush?

JR Carbine is NR - however it is pistol cal. 9mm right now and .40 and .45 to follow.

Not really a hunting gun, but I'm sure inside 100yards a hollowpoint could drop pretty much anything.

If it looks kind of like a duck, it is a duck, in the case for firearms classification.
 
As far as I am concerned there is only one choice available at this time that I would consider = XCR-L in 6.8spc loaded with 95gr TTSX, H322 powder @ 2825fps and I'm now hearing AA2200 may give me 2950fps so I am going to have to try and find some to try out...

and I just put in a backorder with Wolverine for four 10 round 6.8spc pistol mags when they become available...

what do you use for mags with a 300 whisper?

any mods to the bolt?

also what would said conversion cost (roughly) and would it be reversible?

300 Whisper uses all the same basic parts as a 223 except for the barrel itself. The Whisper was designed to go through a semi-auto the same as a 223.

The cost would be the cost of a barrel. Yes it would be reversible as changing out a barrel in an XCR is a piece of piss.

I want a 6mmX223 or 6X45 = 223 case necked to 6mm and I have no interest in a 300 Whisper at this time anyway... :)

few more questions suputin: (i don't think this quite qualifies as a hijack just yet)
how loud are the subsonic rounds with a heavy bullet (+200) grains unsuppressed?
how hard is brass to come across? or is it just easier to make your own?

okay, my interest fully peaked. who does them? ( admit it, you saw this question coming!)

now back on topic - those rfbs look great! I wish mags were of higher availability or there was an m14 magwell conversion
what caliber are the type 88's that are coming in sometime here?

I've been told that barrels longer than 16" start to not function properly. He would still need to be 18.5 to stay non-restricted.

with the easily adjustable gas block on the XCR and some handloads, I'm sure the 18.5 barrel wouldn't pose to much of a problem.

My memory might be wrong, but I seem to remember a couple of years ago seeing an AR-180B that was rechambered to 6.8 on the EE. It looked to be quite a bit work that went into it, but given enough time, money, determination, and of course the right tools, it could be done.

300 Whisper is 221 Fireball necked up to .30 cal. Its metric designation would be 7.62x35.

With its ability to throw 220+ gr bullets the Whisper can put a lot more energy downrange than the 6x45.

Noise level depends on the barrel length and powder used. I have shot subsonic through a 10" barrel without hearing protection. That is not strictly safe for the ears but it isn't painful on the ears. A 16 barrel would be considerably quieter.

Brass is super easy. There are two routes. Buy new 221 Fireball and neck it up or cut down .223 Rem and neck it down. The first is easier but more expensive.

Not function properly in what respect? As you will pretty much have to reload 300 Whisper you just tailor the round for the barrel length you have ... no problems.

I have run subsonic 308 and 7.62x39 in 20+ inch barrels with no problems.

you've got me sold ! I was going to maybe ditch the xcr in favor of a heavier rifle/caliber, but with this is mind......
 
It would be great if rifles like the xcr and other non-restricted rifles in 223 could be set up with barrels that can easily be switched and retain their zero with the different barrels.

That way, if I was to go to the range, then swap in a 223. Or going deer hunting, swap in (caliber of your choice that has 223 rim diameter) barrel.

Very versatile and convenient then.
