Non Restricted Question in 2 Scenario

Newbie question.

If for any reason a vehicle is stopped, trunk opened and there lies a NR rifle in a closed case (i.e Kel Tec SU-16F). The LEO would be on alert of course. My question is how do you go about proving that it is non restricted? What does one need to do to prepare for this scenario?

Likewise, when going to an indoor range as a guest do you inform the front desk that you are bringing in a NR rifle as they may ask for an ATT otherwise?

Appreciate your advise on this.

I'm not in the habit of proving I'm Not Breaking Any Laws. I still live under the presumption of innocence concept.
BTW...I have never been asked for an ATT by a range, or by a cop for that matter.
 
You aren't required to prove its non-restricted, but if you are concerned, then the easiest way is to email the RCMP firearms program with a description of a rifle, brand and model and barrel length etc and ask whether it is restricted. When they reply that it is non-restricted, print the email. That would likely be sufficient to lower any stress level at the roadside. If you don't have this and the police officer for some reason had real concerns with the rifle, they would be able to inquire on the FRT system to determine its legal status, in an extreme case they may seize your rifle for a few days until they have done the check though, and that might frustrate you.

No range I've ever visited would ask to see an ATT....its a legal document and none of their business. That being said, if they asked I would likely show that I had one simply because I like to be accomodating when I can. There is no legal requirement for a range to see an ATT before allowing you entry....if you were buying range ammo to use at the range you would need to show your PAL.

At the end of the day, you are technically innocent until proven guilty....the process is often far less painful if you can prove yourself innocent before you're even accused of being guilty though. I still carry the registration certificate for my XCR-L with me for that reason. I'm not required to produce it, but it will make my life far less complicated if I can quickly show an officer who may have limited firearm experience that I am a law abiding citizen...after that, perhaps I can give them a positive introduction to firearms owners.
 
"...trunk opened..." Why would you open the trunk? A cop has no right to search your vehicle unless you have been charged with something(a Highway Traffic Act offence doesn't count) or you give permission. You have no obligation to allow a cop to search your vehicle just because he wants to do so either. Said cop has to have a reason. You telling him you have a legal firearm(not required either. Certainly not for a HTA or 'spot check' stop.) isn't a reason.
 
Every patrol officer will be able to call in and check the database.

As for the range, my experience is only being asked what I'm shooting and what ammo.

Just because my name is in the CFC database does not imply I have a firearm in the vehicle and it certainly does not give him the right to search my vehicle. Being in the Database does not make me a criminal.
 
Thank you for the feedback. I will be prepared and have the right documents just in case, for any reason I am asked.
 
I was asked by a traffic cop to open the trunk I said rip up the ticket and I will let you look in and see the firearms he said no I said then no I'm not opening it. I was trying to get out of a speeding ticket. He also ticked me off because he said he smelt pot which I replied your full of shi... Because I don't smoke or even drink for the matter. He was just fishing and seeing what he could catch. Lieing and saying he smelled pot kind of pissed me off but that would of been enough to have probable cause to search if he did in fact smell it but I made sure to look him right in the eye and said he was full of sh..

So if you have firearms in the car just say not thanks to the search or bargin with them to get ride of the ticket because that's the only reason they would have pulled you over to begin with.

As for proveing it's non restricted they can call 1 800 731 4000 1 for English 2 for French then hit 0 and ask them to look up the firearm it's as simple as that.

Do they actually know which firearm is which and how to look it up chances are the officer has no idea. I've had to explain the laws and how their written to police officers because they broke some of them... He figured he could have high cap magazines because the department allowed it for duty I told him duty is exempt personal collection isn't.

You can also call the CFO at 18007314000 and ask them to print a FRT info out for you if you really want they might do it.
 
My_2 and Haha said it right. First, they're not interested in your hobbies. Second, you're not responsible to prove it's a NR, they're responsible to prove it's a restricted. You're not likely to ever be asked to open the trunk, and if you are simply decline. "You don't need to see in my trunk. Issue any tickets you think are warranted, and I'll be on my way. "

Oh, I meant that the officer would be able to call in to identify the firearm and determine if it's restricted.
