inspired by another users build in the 10/22 picture forum, i am looking to build a quality, non-restricted (ie. ideally max 26.5" OAL), 22lr, ar15 looking rifle. before you ask, i have not set a budget, but also do not want to spend $2,000 on it.

i want it to be quality enough to pretend that it could be used for self defense purposes ("including jumping from my hummer and VIP protection detail in iraq" - funny line from another thread), but mostly used for plinking with cheap(ish) ammo and "looking cool".

i do not pretend to know much, if anything, about these firearms, so i am deferring to you guys for pictures, suggestions, and experiences!

thx CNGers

(edit)
the inspired build included:
10/22
ACE, ARFX-E Skeleton Stock
DPMS buttstock extender
Hogue grip
Nordic chassis
YHM handguard
Troy muzzle break
Dlask 10.5 custom barrel

goodluck man, i'm like 90% done my 10/22 SBR build. life has kept me from finishing it, but its been fun i took my first gun, a standard black 10/22 in a black synthetic stock..
and now it is 12.5 inch Dlask sr22 barrel with a sporter chamber topped with a troy claymore muzzle brake, sitting in a troy chassis (brake goes just beyond the chassis) with Magpul MOE-K grip, magpul picatinny QD slingmount and Magpul CTR Stock. i added a Kidd Bolt Buffer and Kidd extended mag release. (full disclosure not crazy about how the extended mag release sits may switch to a PWS mag release lever)
still going though, its always fun to tinker.

edit:
and while I had imagined my gun before I put it together, another CGN user Chem had built his to virtually matching specs, a picture of Chem's rig is in post #51

Yeah, its decent with the claymore, although I'm curious as to what it would look like with a Noveske KX5 on there. Plus one on the PWS mag release, would be a huge upgrade over the kid.

PWS mag release does look pretty slick.
Chem do you have any clearer / more recent pics you could post up in this thread?
what magazines are you guys running? was looking at the battledyne - but read nothing but issues in the HiCal thread.

what kind of issues are people having with the battledyne mags?

Unfortunately I don't have any on hand and the rifle is half way across the country from me. I run BC steel lips in it.

I run BC steel lips as well, I find they work well, BUT I have 8 and none have fed hollow points well. I was thinking of looking into tactical innovations magazines, also Noveske has some pretty sweet flush mounting attachments for alpha rails (t22 rail). Also I'd throw some pictures up but I never actually figured out how..

A lot of people (to get the look) have been modding the factory bx10 mags to airsoft pmags or ar style mags. Think they just jb weld it. Steer clear of the battledyne mags, super sloppy fit. The BC steel lips are the best bang for the buck for reliability.

Note that there's 2 lengths of fixed ACE skeletal stocks. I believe they are 9" and 11". Depending on which lenth you go with, and the thickness of the buttpad and length of your bbl, they could factor into your 26" OAL.

Mission First Tactical also make a nice lightweight 'minimalist' stock that is about 1/2 price of the ACE.

that mission first stock looks pretty nice.
my buddy said he'd gift me a magpul moe stock and grip if i wanted them.
easy $90ish dollar saving if i take him up on it - just need to see how it plays into the OAL.
i will look into the airsoft idea to get the look - assume the airsoft pmags would negate any value play on the bc steel lips
