Non-Restricted Swiss Carbine

We haven't discussed barrel length as it affects the gas system. Have you had a chance to shoot this mod'd gun yet, angry?

Yes. I've put about 100 rounds through it. The recoil impulse and general feel of shooting it is not too different then the full size rifle. It is however very different when shot side by side with a 14" gun.

However, shortening a barrel may not deliver enough gas. Anyone have experience with barrel shortening on the full size rifle?

Shortening the full size barrel to 18.5" would require modification to the gas system. Less barrel means less gas to operate the piston. The idea would be to enlarge the gas port and allow a larger volume of gas to be directed toward the regulator. This seems like more trouble then it's worth and you'd only save an inch or two in overall length. At least with the carbine, you save weight and overall mass as well.

Keep in mind all you'de really need to modify is the gas selector. The gas port is already made for an "adverse" mode, so im sure it puts much more gas than needed, all you'd need to do is get the specific drill bit and enlarge the "regular" gas setting so it lets in a whee bit more gas (at least, it makes sense in theory). Not sure how making a "dissipator" style Classic green would work, but if the shortest you can go is 18.5, then I doubt it would be a huge difference to it.

Very interesting.

The integral flash hider is in my opinion the way to go. Only .6" longer than the standard LB version of the carbine which is already at 17.9"

So you are telling me your 14" Carbine is 12oz or .75lbs heavier then the factory published weight?

To put that weight difference into perspective, an ACOG TA31F with a TA51 mount is about 11ozs!

I pulled the Kyle rail and it comes in at 7 oz.
So without the rail mine comes in at 7lbs. 13 oz. - that also sports a collapsible butt stock.

So I pulled both uppers and weighed them alone.

The 20" Black Special weighs 6lbs. 3oz.
The 14" Carbine (without rail) 5lbs. 6oz.
So 3/4" a pound difference between the two.

B&T rail weights in @ 4oz. I flogged my Kyle for 3 oz's less :) Worth it.

I as well talked to Herron Arms was gonna go with the non res barrel but for the price quote I got & maybe a pound less, I have decided my next one will be a Black Special but in flat top mode (I'll be getting BUIS's for it later) which would be close in weight than Ben's carbine.
