We haven't discussed barrel length as it affects the gas system. Have you had a chance to shoot this mod'd gun yet, angry?
Yes. I've put about 100 rounds through it. The recoil impulse and general feel of shooting it is not too different then the full size rifle. It is however very different when shot side by side with a 14" gun.
However, shortening a barrel may not deliver enough gas. Anyone have experience with barrel shortening on the full size rifle?
Shortening the full size barrel to 18.5" would require modification to the gas system. Less barrel means less gas to operate the piston. The idea would be to enlarge the gas port and allow a larger volume of gas to be directed toward the regulator. This seems like more trouble then it's worth and you'd only save an inch or two in overall length. At least with the carbine, you save weight and overall mass as well.
