Hey all, I'm just back into this shooting thing, and have a question regarding some firearms I'm seeing that are being described as "Non-restricted" but do not seem to fall into that category as I understand it.

CZ has a rifle that looks much like an AK and is considered to be non-restricted but has a 30 round magazine? It was my understanding that semi-auto rifles are limited to 5 round magazine capacity.

Ya you're looking at the CZ858 and it's about the closest thing we can get to the AK in this country.
There is also a shorter barreled version of it (VZ58) that looks exactly the same, but is restricted.
Try not to think about why something is or isn't restricted/prohibited too much... it'll only make your head hurt.

Actually, there are two AK variants that are legal in Canada, as well. They are the Valmet Hunter, and the Valmet M 78. The Hunter is basically an AK hunting rifle, and the M 78 looks like an RPK, from the pictures I've seen. Problem is, they are quite rare, and from what I've heard, they sell for several thousand dollars.

I always forget about the Valmets just because of the cost ($3000 plus! from what I've seen), compared to about $650 for the CZ but you're quite right, they are the next best thing to the AKs.

CZ858/VZ58's are nice rifles, but they are NOT AK's. Totally different design and no interchangeable parts.
When you pick up a Valmet you know right away where all that money went. They are based on the AK action (which is arguably the best/most reliable semi-auto action ever designed), but thats not what makes them worth so much money. Valmets are so refined and so well made, it makes shooting them almost an unpleasant thing. I cant say the same about other $3000+ rifles i've handled, and CERTANLY not the CZ858.
